Appearances can certainly be deceiving! I have driven past French Corner in Bryanston hundreds of times and just assumed it was a small little coffee shop. Little did I know that I was missing out on authentic French croissants, outstanding coffee and an absolutely divine menu!

The first thing that struck me about French Corner is the size. There is a large sunny room filled with wooden tables and chairs, a pastry counter, coffee bar and huge bakery at the back. When I was there yesterday, every second table was filled with friends enjoying a late breakfast or early lunch, as well as men reading the paper or typing away on their laptops. While I was drooling over the glass-fronted display unit filled with pastries, cakes and muffins, I was struck by the number of people that popped in for a takeaway coffee and croissant, baguettes stuffed with amazing fillings, and loaves of piping hot bread that had just come out of the oven. (How lovely that NONE of these people ever told me about this venue. I should have been upset, but I was too busy shoving a croissant down my throat.)

The outside courtyard was another revelation – two levels comprising tables and chairs, umbrellas and outdoor heaters. And again, a couple of older gentlemen were enjoying the sun and reading the paper.  I could definitely see this as a potential venue for end-of-year lunches – book out the entire courtyard!

The menu has enough variety without becoming overwhelming. The breakfast menu includes (amongst others) a Farmhouse Breakfast, Eggs Benedict, and Healthy Breakfast. Lunch options include 6 different types of salads, 15 types of sandwiches (on a roll, fresh baguette, panini or croissant) and light meals such as Gourmet Beef Burgers, Fish Cakes, Moroccan Lamb Tagine, Quiches, and Meat Balls. I LOVE the fact that there is also a Low GI section of the menu – low GI and low fat Chicken Mayo Rolls, low GI scones with fat-free cream cheese and low GI strawberry jam, and even a low GI Chicken Curry!

FYI – the croissants are the REAL deal and are flown in from France. They are then defrosted and left to “prove” before being freshly baked on the premises. And trust me, they are good! The venue is also available for day-time/ early evening functions, and also offers catering platters.

SUCH a fabulous little place – no wonder the “locals” have been keeping it a secret for so long!

HOURS: Mon-Fri (7am – 5pm), Sat (7am – 4pm) and Sunday (7am – 2pm).
