Take a moment and look around you … what do you see? Beauty products everywhere! To add to the confusion, you can find yourself caught between lipstick and lipgloss, and just when you thought you had it figured out, lipglass pulled a drive by on your beauty street to further complicate life. Which direction do you go?
Truth is, all these products will give your look a different type of boost! So, in the spirit of having only one lifetime to play around with your makeup, we bring you four of the most riveting beauty rivalries of all time!
Foundation vs. BB Cream
Foundation has dominated the beauty counter for so long that it has easily become the default choice for many. Having said that, BB cream (blemish/beauty balm) is no longer the new kid on the block. In fact, BB cream has proven itself a serious contender in the coverage category. The great thing about BB cream is that it does the job of several of our favourite products in one – it plays the role of facial serum, tinted moisturiser, sunscreen and foundation! It’s also famous for giving a lustrous, airbrushed look and is a definite winner for those days when you want a little coverage but don’t want to look too ‘made up’.
On the flip side, if it’s more coverage you want, then foundation is likely to rise to the occasion – although it doesn't improve your skin the way a BB cream does, even with its sun protection content. Nonetheless, foundation has its advantages – it creates a better canvas for adding colour or crafting that gorgeous matte finish and, because of its density, it’s better for concealing imperfections.
This round goes to … BB cream for its multitasking ability (perfect for the busy woman!). Plus, as much as foundation can cover up blemishes, BB cream can actually help treat them. The Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector All-In-One BB Cream gets the job done brilliantly!
Lipstick vs. Lipgloss
Matte or glossy? Daring colour or extra shine? It really depends on the statement you want to make! Offering a nexus of awe-inspiring bold colours, lipstick no doubt creates a classier, sexier, more mature and grounded look. It has increased in popularity over the last decade … and with good reason, as it can also provide the perfect cover up for the pitfalls of an outfit. If your outfit is already banging all on its own, then adding lipstick will definitely throw you into a whole new realm of hotness!
Lipgloss, on the other hand, is very young, light and feminine. It contributes to a more vibrant and natural look, and that’s certainly an adorable trait in this day and age (there’s way too much fake in these streets, people!). Coupled with the right eye make up, gloss can be equally as inviting. It’s easier to apply and remove, needs no extra precision, and does not cake on your lips. But, depending on how you’re dressed, it can look a little ‘Kideo’, which is never a good thing if you want to be taken seriously. Nevertheless, if it’s an effortless look you’re after, then lipgloss is a must-have accessory!
This round goes to … lipstick! As an add-on, it’s more dynamic, versatile and undoubtedly offers that sophisticated finish that lipgloss won’t. There’s also a wider array of colours available. I’m a huge fan of Revlon’s ColorStay lip colour collection.
Liquid Eyeliner vs. Gel Eyeliner
This match-up has created a longstanding debate in beauty circles. Truth is, both liners are powerhouses in their own right – they’re both in the business of creating a dramatic chic look – think stunning cat eye or magnetic Cleopatra! So what’s the difference? Liquid eyeliner is ideal for creating that perfectly precise line (no mess, no fuss), while gel liner allows you to build up on your line, creating more animated eye makeup. The latter is also more forgiving of mistakes as it allows room to play around.
This round goes to … gel eyeliner! It’s easy to use and allows for more adventure. If you find yourself on the hunt for a really good product, try the Mac Fluidline Eyeliner Gel – it’s a make-up kit essential.
Acrylic Nails vs. Gel Nails
When it comes to artificial nails, acrylic nails are more popular and, for a long time, they had been unrivalled … until gel nails slowly but steadily crept into the beauty picture, that is. The former involves getting an artificial nail applied to your nail bed before it gets glued on with liquid acrylic and powder. The result is a hard, protective layer on which you can apply a frenzy of colour. These are strong and long-lasting and, in the event that they crack, they can be easily repaired at home … and, to stick the landing, they are super-affordable.
This brings us to gel nails, which have completely taken the beauty world by storm! They are applied by having two to three coats of gel nail polish painted on, then dried using a UV gel nail dryer before the next step is tackled. So, what renders them serious competition for acrylic nails? They are much more realistic and natural looking and have an elegant, glossy finish to them. They are also slimmer than acrylic nails, adding to that dazzling au naturel look. Plus, they generally last longer than acrylic nails.
This round goes to … gel nails! Anything that looks natural is a champ in my eyes. Also, the process of applying gel nails can be easier and less hazardous. More importantly, they are more flexible, which makes them less prone to damage. For a fabulous nail treatment, try Sorbet Nail Bar.
