Jacobs, the now household name in instant coffee, have given Joburg an awesome gift for Winter. The Jacobs Board Game Café in Parkhurst may only be open until the end of August but it’s a good few months in which I intend on accusing Ms Scarlett with the candlestick and triple-word-scoring until I can’t even order dinner without rolling a die to determine my decision.
It always warms me a little when I find that big, fancy brands are invested in their customers beyond simply asking them to buy their brand. Not only are they providing a space for us to go play games, but they have created an environment where smart-phones and Twitter are forgotten about in favour of personal interaction and old fashioned fun – oh, and did I mention the free coffee? Yes, that’s right, flop down on their comfy chairs and couches, snuggle up under a blanket and contemplate your 4th cup of Jacobs coffee (don’t worry, they have decaf too)! If you get hungry, simply order from one of the neighbouring restaurants on 4th Avenue, Parkhurst and eat it right there in the café!
I was struggling to come up with a flaw in this genius establishment, but then I came across it – the only problem is that they are only open until the end of August. Why? I don’t know. Probably because our brand loyalty and their generosity will only pay so many of the bills; but, I’m hopeful that this will create a precedent that Joburg simply won’t accept a discontinuation of.
Until that day, you can (and must!) go play games, drink coffee or even book birthday parties at the Jacobs Board Game Café in Parkhurst!
The venue will also be hosting several small events throughout the next few months such as ladies evenings and speed dating and is available for personal bookings such as birthday parties, hen’s parties, brain storms etc. A schedule will be available at the café and on the “Jacobs Krönung South Africa” Facebook page (below).
