If you’ve ever needed a good reason to be a carnivore I’ve found it! It’s called Meat. etc and it’s nothing short of a meat lover’s haven. The spot opened at Benmore Gardens shopping centre just under a year ago and on Friday I was literally smacking myself for taking so damn long to finally check it out. I noticed the spot a few months ago and made a mental note to pop in and investigate further, but every time I went to Benmore Gardens I either forgot or didn’t have the time. Well Darlings, last Friday I made time and boy am I glad I did. Here’s why I’m going to be dragging friends, family, colleagues and probably even random people I see on the street with me to this killer foodie spot.
I personally think that the super cool sandwich shop, deli and butchery opened up in Benmore Gardens to rescue lunch times and Saturday braais for Joburgers everywhere, but owner Liza will tell you it was just because she loves food and feeding people. And, before you think they just, poof, came out of nowhere you’ll be interested to hear that they’re actually backed by industry heavyweight The Grillhouse, and owner Liza was the previous owner of legendary sandwich shop Reuben’s. When Reubens' lease was up at its previous location Lisa was approached by The Grillhouse Group for a joint venture to create a butchery slash American-style deli, and so Meat. etc Benmore was born! Essentially the spot is a retail outlet for The Grillhouse Butchery but they also offer delicious grub for hungry Joburgers who want to sit down for a super yummy sarmie, hot dog or hot meal.
While I was there I checked out the menu and tucked into the Rueben’s Special sandwich. The sandwich is piled high with hot beef, Emmentaler cheese, sauerkraut, tomato, pickled cucumber and their special sweet mustard sauce (R89) and while it may seem pricey it’s completely worth the cash! It was one of the best sarmies I’d ever had and I’ve been dreaming about it ever since. The quality of meat they use is just too impressive and you can tell they’ve been creating sarmie masterpieces for years. If sandwiches aren’t your thing then make sure you tuck into their American-style hotdogs which come with all the trimmings for R38. Jewish readers will also be happy to hear that the dogs are made with Kosher meat. They also serve up a fresh deli meal every day like Beef Stew and Rice for just R60 – perfect for lunch.
And, once you’re chockfull of yummy foodie delights check out the butchery counter for their prime meat and biltong. The meat on offer is the same they use for the Grillhouse and often you can get spectacular deals on “offcuts” (I’m talking amazing meat cuts, not the rejected bits you’d expect) and steaks that are too small for the Grillhouse menu. For example when I was there they had packs of fillet sosaties (yes, as in fillet steak) for just R40 and steaks that measured just under 400g for R20 cheaper than the supermarket.
So, now that I’ve convinced you, make sure you pop in this weekend for their weekend specials. Fridays you can grab a hotdog for just R28 and on Sundays you can tuck into a Boerewors Roll for only R20 or a home-made hamburger for just R30. Oh, and the next time you have a meeting at the office don’t forget they also do amazing snack and meal platters for corporates and events. Say hello to !
