Darlings, after hearing so much about Perron, the trendy Mexican restaurant in Illovo, I finally decided to try it out for myself this past weekend … and I’m so glad I did! This upmarket spot ticks all the boxes – delicious cocktails, tasty food, funky décor and a vibey ambiance! Let me tell you more.
My boyfriend, Nik, and I arrived at Perron on a warm Saturday evening and were seated at a table framed by wonderfully loud, pink and turquoise walls. Our friendly waiter came over right away and took our drinks order. I went for the Delicias de Fruta, which is a blend of raspberry vodka, orange liqueur, melon liqueur, pineapple juice and cranberry juice, and Nik ordered a Classic Mojito.
Our drinks came out quickly, and they were great! My cocktail especially was something really different … and potent, I might add! If you’re a pink drink kind of gal, you’ve got to try it. We then decided that we’d order a number of small dishes to share and went for the Jalapeno Poppers, Sweet Potato on Corn Fritters, Slow Cooked Pork Taco, Popcorn Pollo Taco and Fish Taco.
Every dish presented a burst of flavour of its own. My favourite had to be the Fish Taco … the battered fish filling with just delicious! Second favourite was the Popcorn Pollo Taco, which was filled with fried chicken breast. It was so tasty! The only dish I didn’t really enjoy was the Sweet Potato on Corn Fritters … I felt that the fritters themselves should’ve been a bit more crispy.
After finishing every last crumb of deliciousness on our plates, we were stuffed … but certainly not too stuffed for dessert! We ordered both the Churros (rolled in cinnamon and sugar and served with a chocolate dipping sauce) and the Arancini (deep fried coconut rice pudding with roasted apple, crema and cinnamon). The desserts were beautifully presented and really hit the spot.
I definitely want to return to Peron to indulge in some of their others dishes as well as try one of their real Mexican tequilas, which I hear are a delight. I saw waiters carrying tequila out all night, and noticed that it’s served with spiced tomato juice, which I like the sound of!
Overall, I really enjoyed Perron … it’s fun, it’s trendy, the service is enthusiastic, the food is great and it’s certainly a hotspot of note. I wouldn’t classify it as “authentic Mexican”, because it’s not … but it’s still downright delicious! Darlings, if you’re looking for a fabulous spot for a date night, a girls’ night out or a birthday dinner, give Perron a try. Just be sure to book well in advance, as they’re always busy ... arriba!
