Darlings, over the weekend I finally got round to visiting a trendy little spot in Morningside Shopping Centre by the name of The Green Peppercorn Bistro that I’d been wanting to try out for months. After hearing lots of great things about it and seeing many pictures of their simply stunningly presented dishes, I was very much looking forward to finally checking it out for myself, and am so excited to tell you all about my “wow” experience!
I arrived at the fashionable restaurant with a girlfriend of mine around lunchtime and we were instantly made to feel at home by the warm, welcoming group of waiters. Our waiter, affectionately named Skinny Cappuccino, was especially friendly and knowledgeable. If you’re wondering, “what’s with the name?” – the waiters here all boast their own sweet, humorous nicknames that patrons can call them by. Another is Papa Smurf. It’s all in the name of fun!
Skinny Cappuccino handed us each a menu (which are tablets, I might add – fancy, right?) and talked us through some of his top recommendations. The restaurant fuses flavours from around the world, focusing on Africa and Asia via the Middle East, to offer up some seriously mouth-watering dishes. All of the flavour combinations are daring and experimental, which I just love! The menu is very extensive, boasting everything from breakfasts and light meals, to fish and meat dishes.
To start off, my friend and I each ordered up a freshly squeezed juice. I opted for a medley of carrot, apple and ginger, while she chose the green juice. Our juices arrived promptly in lovely, tall glasses and were as fresh and flavourful as can be! Then, to nibble while we caught up, we ordered the fried prawn and avo roll, the sticky chicken wings, as well as the mushroom and spinach spring rolls to share.
All three dishes were beautifully presented and amazingly tasty. I especially enjoyed the prawn and avo roll, filled with prawn, fresh avo, coriander and Japanese mayo, served on a bed of greens. Downright delicious was all we could say! Then, for mains, I went with the cured hake, while my friend chose one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, the five-spiced braised pork belly.
Our mains reached our table within good time, and when they arrived, I was simply blown away! Our dishes were colourful and ever so creatively put together – they both looked like a work of art! After snapping some very much Instagram-worthy photos, we tucked in, and all I can say is that for me, it was love at first bite. My fillet of hake was perfectly cooked, and the unique combination of flavours in the dish made for an incredibly memorable meal.
For if you’re wondering, my fish was done in a sticky coconut and lime sauce, served on a bed of fresh Thai veggies, with three different purees on the side – potato, butternut and pea. To be honest, I’m still “wowed” by how amazing that mouth-watering dish of mine was! I’m happy to report that my friend enjoyed her meal as much as I did mine, and even went as far as to say that it was the most tender and perfectly spiced pork belly dish she’d ever tasted!
Sadly, we didn’t have any room left for dessert after our spectacular meals, but to prolong our fantastic dining experience just a bit longer, my friend and I decided to each indulge in a cocktail. I went for a tantalising raspberry martini, while she decided on a tasty strawberry caipirinha. Beautifully presented once again, our drinks were simply fantastic, and were bursting with delicious flavours of fresh fruit. They were the perfect ending to our memorable lunch!
Darlings, all in all, I had a top-notch time at The Green Peppercorn Bistro. It really had been a long time since a restaurant last blew me away as much as this one did. Throughout our meal, which we enjoyed at a leisurely pace, my friend and I were truly treated like royalty. That, combined with the out-of-this-world food that was both amazingly tasty as well as artfully presented, made for a memorable meal that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
To add, the atmosphere was enthusiastic and just so enjoyable, and in my opinion it’s largely thanks to the energetic bunch of staff that work there. Their passion for pleasing patrons is very noticeable, and this isn’t something you see in every restaurant you visit. The Green Peppercorn Bistro is a perfect spot for brunch with the girls, a long, lazy lunch, an intimate date night, and everything in-between. Go and check this spot out for yourselves … just be sure to arrive with an empty tummy! You’re in for a treat.
