If you’ve been reading this blog for a while then you will know that I’m a massive fan of anything unique and different - and, it doesn’t get much cuter or much quirkier than Katy’s Palace Bar in Kramerville. The only problem with this incredible spot is that it’s not open to the public often enough! Katy’s is primarily a space for private events and it’s only open to the public for select public events and on the first Sunday of every month. I first discovered the spot when I attended a very swanky event there early last year, and was heartbroken when I heard that you couldn’t just pop in to the venue for drinks whenever you pleased. I have been positively smitten with the venue ever since, and so when someone told me that they offer a Sunday lunch once a month I immediately dropped what I was doing and made a plan to go to the very next one! Here’s why you have to check out the next Katy’s Palace Bar Sunday lunch immediately!
If you’ve never been to Katy’s then it’s probably quite imperative that I tell you all about the decor of this spot because that is what makes it so magical. Walking into this spot for the first time you’ll get the feeling that you’ve just discovered an ancient and super secret spot created for someone incredibly special (and you’d be right – well almost). Katy’s Palace Bar was created by a business man as a venue especially for his daughter’s wedding and he then decided to open it up for others to use as well. So it’s not ancient but it was created with love and boy does it show! The space is incredibly beautiful and everything from the exposed face brick walls, shabby-chic wooden tables and metal chairs, and vintage-inspired decorations to the fine art and artefacts from across the globe come together in a truly unique way to create a place that is dripping in old world charm.
I hope after that description you can imagine that having lunch at this unique rooftop venue is a truly magical experience. If the decor isn’t enough to catch your imagination then you can catch an incredible view of Sandton and surrounds from the balcony of Katy’s – it’s also an incredible place to watch the sunset. But enough about the decor – let’s talk about the food!
The first thing you need to know about this incredible lunch offering is that you can’t make a booking – which means you need to make sure you get there as early as possible to grab a table. Doors open at ten ‘o clock on Sunday morning and the event runs until about six ‘o clock that evening. My buddy and I got there at about eleven ‘o clock and there were still quite a few tables available, but it started getting super full just after then so make sure you get there before twelve ‘o clock. We ordered a bottle of wine and chilled for a little while before lunch was served at midday.
Lunch is a self-serve buffet and is charged per weight (R18 per 100 grams) and boy is it a spread of epic proportions! We were treated to a feast of a Leafy Green Salad; Creamy Chicken and Leek Pies; Deboned Glazed Gammon with honey mustard sauce; Herb-crusted Sirloin with herb béarnaise and Dijon cream sauce; Roast Potatoes; Roasted Butternut and Sweet Potatoes; and Rosa Tomato, Danish Feta and Basil Quiches to name just a few! We served up a plate each and then sat down to enjoy the vibe of the live music while we ate. The food was super yummy and I loved everything I put on my plate!
The buffet doesn’t include dessert, but if you’re keen on something sweet afterwards then you can pop over to the cake and coffee stand on the opposite side of the room and purchase a yummy cupcake and a warm cup of coffee to cap it all off. Say hello to .
