It is official; I have a brand new obsession – hair feathers! I can’t get enough of them and am slowly collecting them in every colour (well at least that’s the plan). So far I have three different colours and am already making plans to buy more. If you have no idea what I am on about then keep reading because this new hair trend is pretty much the most fun you will ever have with your hair. But wait, there’s more! I first came across Feather Friends when I was browsing through the Bibi Rouge pop-up shop a few months ago. Sabrina of Bibi Rouge had invited a few other brands to come along to the pop-up shop and the one that stood out most for me was definitely Feather Friends. Owner Michaela offered to put a feather in my hair and that was it – I was hooked! The feather extensions are all kinds of cool and are the perfect way to embrace your inner flower child without having to commit to permanent streaks of colour in your hair. I have always wanted blue streaks in my hair but have never been brave enough to take the plunge until I discovered Feather Friends. I love that the feathers give you the option to have a subtle pop of colour in your hair for as long as you want. I also love that the feathers can be washed, flat ironed and blow-dried like normal hair without getting damaged. This means you can put them in and forget all about them until it’s time to take them out a few months later.
Feather Friends offers real feathers in almost every conceivable colour – blue, pink, turquoise, brown, purple, black and white naturals, orange and even tie-dye – the options are endless! My first feather was brown (to match my hair) and was incredibly natural looking. From there I moved on to two blue feathers (a more natural looking black and blue striped feather as well as a striking blue feather) and absolutely loved them too – in fact, it’s now two months later and they are still in my hair! The feathers can be inserted by Feather Friends when you buy your feathers or you can buy a DIY kit along with your feathers and do it yourself at home. The feathers are bound to your hair using a micro bead and then grows out with your own hair (I was told they can last anywhere up to six months before they need to be taken out). I was also thrilled to hear that the micro bead has silicone inside so it won’t damage your hair while the feather is attached. The micro beads also come in an assortment of colours to match to your own hair colour (including blonde, brown, dark brown and black).
What’s more, if you’ve had enough of your feather or a particular colour then you can simply take it out and keep it for a special occasion when you feel like putting it back in again - all you need is another bead. I love the feathers so much that I bought a DIY kit from Feather Friends the last time I was there and was delighted to find that it was only about R150 (depending on the kit you buy). My kit came with a feather threading tool (which looks like a fancy over-sized needle) and a pair of pliers and it has made my life a million times easier, being able to put them in and take them out whenever I like.
The Feather Friends feathers are priced at R50 each for single feathers, R55 each for tie-dye feathers, R60 each for medium thickness grizzly feathers and R250 for large clip-in feathers. They also stock a range of other super cool products such as flower head bands and head chains which are coming back into fashion.
