Over the past year and a bit I’ve donned many an apron and attended cooking class after cooking class, all in the name of blogging. I’ve done this because I have been determined to find the very best cooking classes in Joburg so that you, my Darlings, know exactly where to go when you’re looking for some inspiration in the kitchen. Today I’m super excited to tell you that I’ve found what is quite possibly the best cooking class in Joburg (scouts honour). Why is it the best? Well, that’s quite easy – it’s got the most character of any class I’ve ever been to, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in the kitchen and the food was pretty darn awesome. Here’s why you have to book a seat at The Kitchen Space now!
The little cooking studio in Parkhurst is run by dynamic duo Su-yen and Rachel who inject their passion for good food into every class they teach. The Kitchen Space focuses mainly on Asian cooking and through their cooking demos they aim to give Joburgers the confidence to tackle the task of cooking the seemingly difficult, but surprisingly easy, cuisine in their own homes. Book a spot at one of the demos and you can learn to make everything from Chinese and Malaysian dishes to Thai and Vietnamese delights.
The demos take place every Thursday night from 19:00 – 21:00, with each night offering a different lesson to tuck into. If Thai is your thing then you’re best off attending a Thai demo where you will learn to make goodies like Seared Beef and Papaya Salad, Thai fishcakes, and Tom Yum Kung Soup. If you’re a huge fan of Chinese grub then their Chinese classes offer the secret to dishes like Pork and Prawn Dim sum dumplings, and Crispy Aromatic Duck with pancakes. For something different book a spot at the Vietnamese class to try your hand at making treats like Vietnamese spring rolls and Sugar Cane Prawns; the Malaysian class to learn the tricks to Chicken & Beef Satay and Chicken and Prawn Laksa Soup; or the Japanese class where you can dig into creations like Salmon Teriyaki and Japanese salad.
I got the chance to attend a Chinese 3 class where we learned how to make Crispy Aromatic Duck with pancakes, cucumber and spring onions and Hoisin sauce; Salt & Pepper Calamari with chilli and garlic; Chicken and Sweetcorn Soup, and Stuffed Aubergine with shrimps in a Black Bean sauce served with Jasmine rice. When my cooking buddy and I arrived we were greeted with a yummy litchi martini welcome drink and shown to our seats at the table for the night. Each guest is given a front row seat around the massive kitchen island so they can see all the action as it happens in the kitchen. The class is mostly taught by Su-yen who is from Asian descent and probably the most entertaining cook in the history of ever. Here energetic teaching style pretty much makes the whole class, and you can’t help but be completely enthralled with her throughout the class.
Something else I loved about the demo is that you not only get the chance to watch Su-yen make the magic happen but you also get to assist! We turned into Su-chefs for the Crispy Aromatic Duck dish and were given the task of making our own pancakes and slicing veggies for our wraps. I was also super impressed with how much food there was – there were about 12 of us in the class the night I was there and there was enough food for seconds and thirds if you wanted. The food was also wholly delicious – so much so that if Su-yen ever opened an Asian restaurant I would be the first one there!
The Kitchen Space classes will set you back R290 per person and includes a welcoming martini, recipe book, a four-course meal and a goodie bag to take home. Students are requested to bring their own wine or additional drinks for the night. The classes are fabulous for a night out with the girls, a birthday celebration or just a fun night out with your man. Say Hello to the guys from .
