It was my one-year old niece’s birthday party on Thursday and I was tasked with the all-important Tinkerbell cupcakes and shiny pink fairy wands made out of rice crispie treats. Needless to say, it was time to find a proper grown-up baking shop!
The Baker’s Warehouse in Bryanston has been vaguely on my radar screen for some time, but seeing as though I normally buy my baking ingredients when shopping for groceries, I have never made a plan to pop by. But as my recipe called for edible fairy glitter and something that would make the fairy wands a beautiful shade of pink, I hopped onto Google and went in search of this baker’s paradise.
And let me tell you, it has the wow factor. Whether you are a casual baker like me, or venture into this minefield of fondant icing, piping bags, and various decorations quite frequently, you will definitely want to visit this store. I found the most beautiful cupcake holders, wide array of spices, ready-made icing, enormous variety of cake decorations and sprinkles, not to mention baking tins and different types of chocolate.
I was also thrilled to discover that the store offers Icing Classes each Tuesday from 9am – 12pm. You can learn the art of Butter Icing (basic techniques, borders and flowers), Plastic Icing (colouring, covering a cake, stenciling and plaques), Royal Icing (basic techniques, flowers and leaves) and Cupcake Décor (butter and plastic icing techniques, animal face decoration, 3D teddy decoration, and single rose cupcakes). Classes are by appointment only and cost between R175 and R200 per class.
(PS I had a little difficulty finding the store as it is not in the main section of the Hobart Shopping Centre but rather on Hobart Rd itself, next to La Campagnola restaurant.)
