If there are two things I love it’s food and anything with a touch of nostalgia, and today’s find has a bit of both (yay!) The only problem with loving food so much is that it requires you to cook, and often (if only eating out at fancy pants restaurants every day wasn’t so expensive), and I must admit that I am a rather uninspired cook. I struggle to think of funky new ideas to spice up my dishes and almost always revert back to the same-old-same-old dishes. But gone are the days of boring and basic meals because I’ve found a cool little tool that makes it super easy to be inspired. It’s called Gooi and Enjoy and it’s every newbie cook’s dream come true!

The brain child of local laser cutting extraordinaires, Paperkutz, the Gooi and Enjoy Meal Dice are exactly what you’ve unknowingly needed in your kitchen all this time! The set of nine wooden laser cut dice come in a super cute enamel mug (that’s old school charm at its best) which can be used to shake up the dice and your meal planning for the week. And the best bit? The dice also encourages cooks to use fresh South Africa ingredients rather than the odd processed stuff we often stuff down our throats. On each side of the nine dice you will find ingredients like mealies, pap, lamb, avos, potatoes and more. I love that the individual dice are divided up into categories such as protein, carb, herb, one extra ingredient and a cooking method (which includes braai, steam, stew, roast, fry  and grill) – it really doesn’t get any simpler than that and you can be sure that you’re hitting all the basic food groups. In addition to that you also get four seasonal vegetable dice – one spring, summer, autumn and winter dice each with six seasonal vegetables for you to choose from.

You can use the dice to plan your weekly meals all at once (making shopping a breeze) or to get inspiration for dinner each night. To get started simple put five basic dice and one seasonal veg dice for the current season into your cup shake it up (feel free to add in a little jog in the kitchen at this point) and roll them onto the table to see what you’re working with. Of course if you don’t like what you’ve rolled or you don’t eat lamb and want another option then you can roll again. Once you’ve got your ingredients you can raid your cupboard or write out your shopping list for the things you need to cook up a storm. And, if you’re still stuck then you can also use Google to find a recipe or two using your ingredients (there are some great recipe sites which let you search by ingredient) until you feel confident enough to wing it. You also don’t have to use the dice exactly so feel free to use it as inspiration and add additional ingredients to your dish.

Gooi and Enjoy is also a great way to experiment in the kitchen and who knows, you might just come up with your new-favourite meal of all time just by rolling the dice and taking a chance on things that you might not ordinarily put together! The Gooi and Enjoy set also makes for a stunning gift for a newly married couple or a friend who loves to cook, and will set you back just R190 per set. The dice can be ordered through the Paperkutz online store and can be couriered directly to your door.
