Darlings, words cannot describe how super excited I am about today’s find! One of my most favourite nail polish brands has finally launched its long-awaited gel polish collection in South Africa. That’s right; now South African ladies can get an Essie Gel manicure and enjoy the absolutely amazing Essie quality and colours without having to worry about repainting again in a day or two. Beauty enthusiasts have been waiting ages for Essie to launch a gel polish, but we can’t even be mad at them for making us wait because their reasons for waiting make all the sense in the world – they wanted to launch a product that would perfectly suit the lifestyle and needs of their loyal customers and boy did they deliver! There has been a lot of debate about gel polish in recent months and while some have completely written off gel polish because they’re afraid of what it will do to their nails the amount of gel polish fans continues to grow every day. Love it or hate it, here’s why you have to try Essie Gel Polish for your next mani or pedi.

As one of the biggest professional nail polish brands in South Africa it’s about time Essie brought their innovative new gel polish system to our shores. The brand is well-known for their awesome collection of colours, and while I am beyond obsessed with some of the colours they offer I must admit that I don’t use their natural polishes nearly as often as I should because of the fact that it’s not worth the schlep for me. Natural polish almost always only lasts a maximum of two days on my nails (if I’m lucky) so these days I would much rather invest in a gel manicure so I can get a little more bang for my buck. Luckily the angels over at Essie heard my prayers and have recently released some of their famous colours in a gel range – offering fans fabulous colour with a much longer wear.  The range is available for professional use only and will be launching with 36 fabulous unique shades (2 of which are brand new and 34 of which are existing Essie shades) including a range of pinks, pastels, reds, blues and greens. Plus, the Essie team promised that by next year fans can look forward to an additional 40 shades on top of the launch range (that’s a total of 76 colours by the beginning of next year!)

So what make the Essie Gel system so different from everything else on the market? For starters the gel range has been designed to care and protect client’s nails. The Essie team found that women were complaining that gel polish often damaged or weakened their nails and that they didn’t like the way their nails looked after their gel manicure was soaked off. Women also told them that gel polish ranges lacks vibrant colours and that they were often stuck with a limited range of colours to choose from. So, they went away and developed a gel product that not only protects and cares for the client’s nails but that also provides some of the most unique colours on the market – genius right? The Essie Gel range is based on keratin-care technology that makes sure that the client’s nails are cared for at every step of the mani or pedi process. A vitamin E derivative works as a powerful antioxidant to offer free radical protection as well as increase water retention in the nail (which is important because a lack of moisture in the nail is what causes it to break); and pro vitamin B5 helps to moisturise the natural nail as well as strengthen it and promote optimal nail health. It’s all about taking care of your natural nail whilst causing minimal damage – which is music to my ears.

Essie claims that the gel is also easier to apply – which saves a lot of headaches for manicurists. The Essie Gel has been designed to ensure thin viscosity which means that, unlike thick gels, it goes on like a natural polish and is easy to apply; they have also introduced a bigger LED lamp that is able to fit your entire hand or foot during curing. What’s more, (and this is the really clever bit) the gel is also easier to remove; Essie designed a no-buff soak off system that allows the customer to be in and out of the salon in 20 minutes. The removal system is less abrasive and doesn’t leave your nails feeling thin and brittle afterwards. The soak off is also finished off with the Essie Conditioning Oil so your nails are left feeling healthy and moisturised.

There are only a handful of spots in Cape Town and Joburg offering Essie Gel at the moment but the team has mentioned that they are converting new salons almost every day. The recommended price for an Essie Manicure (including soak off) is being pitched at R180 so here’s hoping that salons follow that advice! If you’re in Gauteng then visit Bonolobelle in Krugersdorp, Hair Design On Bradford in Bedfordview and Skin PHD in Pretoria for an Essie Manicure now. The Western Cape only has one spot at the moment, Marios Company in Greenpoint.
