If you’re looking for a fabulous spot to tuck into a tasty breakfast or delicious lunch with the whole family, look no further than River Café. This relaxed, open plan spot offers an awesome menu as well as great facilities for kids – it’s fully equipped with a jungle gym and huge sandpit.

We popped into River Café over the weekend for a bite to eat at lunchtime and the first thing we found interesting about the café is its location, which is the Sandton Field & Study Center, in the middle of Parkmore. The open lawns and tall trees, make for a lovely, laidback atmosphere.

The weather was sunny but at the same time chilly, so we opted to sit inside. The indoor section is lovely and neat, with basic décor and a wood burning pizza oven. Outdoors, there’s a cosy little balcony as well as a few tables out on the lawns, which is great for parents wanting to keep an eye on their little ones enjoying themselves on the playground.

The place was chock-full with families and had a cheerful ambiance to it, despite the weather being windy and cold. To add, our waiter, Nkosi, was ever so warm and welcoming, which only added to the pleasant atmosphere. To start off, we each ordered up an “adult” hot chocolate, which warmed up us quickly and was absolutely delicious.

It was a tough decision deciding what to eat with all of the tantalising options, which include breakfasts, snack platters, salads, toasted sandwiches, sarmies, wraps, quesadillas, tramezzinis, pastas, burgers, pizzas, grills and of course kiddies’ options. After much contemplation, we decided on a pizza with bacon, mushrooms and avocado and the tender crumbed chicken schnitzel.

Our food arrived promptly and was top-notch. My pizza is one of the best I’ve ever had, consisting of a thin, crispy base and a generous portion of fresh toppings. The schnitzel was perfectly cooked, served in the most decadent cheddar cheese sauce with a generous side of seasonal veggies and chips.

After enjoying our meals, we were then treated by the chef to a delicious panna cotta with berry compote. I loved both the presentation and different textures of this dish – it made for the perfect sweet ending to our lunch! After scoffing down this sweet treat of note, we decided that we’ll definitely be returning soon to try some of their cakes and desserts.

For simple food done exceptionally well, be sure to pop into River Café. The location is stunning, the menu and food are both to-die-for, and the service is outstanding. In fact, the manager, Frank, was on the floor at all times ensuring everyone was happy. This place is a hidden gem and I can’t wait to go back!

PS: River Café is also the ideal location to host your little one’s birthday party. They can even arrange custom platters and cakes for the occasion. For more information on this, please contact them directly.
