I hate to admit it but deep down, beneath this super girly facade, I’m a bit of a geek. I grew up with three older brothers and as a result I’m into all sorts of stuff that girls aren’t really supposed to be into (apparently) – I’m talking things like super heroes, Star Wars, Back To The Future, vintage video games and old school animated TV shows like Biker Mice From Mars and He-Man - I love it all! So, you can imagine that when I discovered Fairy Goth Mother in Linden I pretty much freaked the heck out – the relatively new shop-slash-restaurant-slash-craft workshop is a geek paradise and I am beyond excited that it has come into my life. If you are a geek, or know and love a geek, then you simply must make a plan to get down to this spot like, yesterday.
You might have gathered from my brief description above that Fairy Goth Mother is a bit of a mixed bag – a mixed bag of awesome that is. I popped into the shop just over a week ago and loved that the spot has multiple personalities – visitors can pop in for a yummy bite to eat, shop up a storm in the retail corner or grab some glue, paint and mosaics and craft to their heart’s content.
My visit was initially supposed to be all about eating and trying their menu – I clearly have my priorities in order – but when I arrived I got so caught up in the amazing things they have for sale that I completely forgot about my lunch! The shop sells a variety of geek-themed goodies that will totally knock your socks off – from figurines of your favourite movie and comic book characters and comic books to home decor items made from fabric featuring your favourite action figure, they’ve got it all here.
The thing that blew me away the most was their incredible fabric selection – they have every type of geek-themed fabric you can imagine and they can make almost anything you want out of it. A Superman or Pac Man throw pillow, Harry Potter sheets, Darth Vader pyjamas, a Batman teddy bear, a Dr Who duvet – if you can dream it they can probably make it for you. My colleague Kim and I spent ages rifling through the fabrics in the shop and thought of endless things we want them to make for us when pay day comes around again. Right now I’m lusting after an incredibly cute Pac Man throw pillow, a 50s pinup-style comforter and pillow, as well as a super cute Minion figurine that I saw smiling at me on one of the counter tops.
And then there’s the crafting! At Fairy Goth Mother they are serious about relaxing ... while crafting. They don’t take the practice of crafting too seriously and instead focus on making sure those who come to craft in their shop are having as much fun as humanly possible. And, if that means sipping on a glass of wine or incredibly good coffee while you mosaic, bead, paint glass, knit, scrapbook or make a teddy then so be it. Fairy Goth Mother offers all sorts of classes where you can learn the art of crafting, but customers are also most welcome to pop in and craft all on their lonesome as well. The craft supply side of the store stocks everything from blank wooden trays and other items to paint, beads and more so you can stock up and craft in the shop or at home. They also offer crafting for little ones and moms are welcome to bring the kids in for an afternoon of crafting while they enjoy a slice of cake and a cup of coffee.
Speaking of cake – we also ate while we were there! The Fairy Goth Mother menu is simple but wholesome and offers a selection of burgers, sandwiches, salads, cakes and baked goods like scones and muffins. I tucked into a delicious Salmon Burger (lemon-seasoned salmon patty, garnished with rocket and lemon mayo, served with chips – R60) and my colleague enjoyed a Manly Burger (pure beef patty cooked with bacon and garnished with burger sauce and onion rings, served with chips and salady bits – R55). We washed it all down with a yummy cup of Vanilla tea (R18). They also have a kid’s menu featuring yummy treats like French toast with honey (R25) and Chicken Nuggets and chips (home-made with real chicken – R40).
In addition to the craft classes, the little shop also hosts all sorts of fun geek-themed events on a regular basis so make sure you visit their website for a list of craft classes and upcoming events.
