In the spirit of Valentine’s Day I thought I would give you a super sweet find today – literally. No, this isn’t a love-sick post about where to head with your Valentine this weekend; rather it’s all about where to find fabulously affordable sweets for your sweet and sugar for your honey (sorry, I couldn’t resist the sweet puns)! So, if you love all things sweet then you’re going to be a regular customer at Dick’s Sweets in Northcliff.

If you are a born and bred Joburger then chances are you have probably heard of Dick’s Sweets before, but I bet you didn’t know they have a retail store? The folks at Dick’s Sweets have been in the business of confectionery since 1938 and have now opened a retail shop at the Impala Centre on Beyers Naude Drive and boy is it a great find. The tiny little shop isn’t much to look at, but once you step inside you will be like a kid in a candy store (again there was no resisting that one!) because their sweets are not only crazy affordable but also oh so yummy.

With delights like over-sized rope lollipops, Turkish Delight, Nougat, nuts and dried fruit, chocolates, honeycomb, fudge and more, the Dick’s Sweets retail store really is sweet central. The sweets are sold in pre-packaged un-marked clear bags and are priced at almost factory shop prices. I popped into the shop and grabbed a few packets of sweets including sour skateboards (my favourite!), Apricot sweets (R10 a bag), Pink and White Almonds (R14 a bag), Sweet Puffy Corn (R3 a bag) and Multi Moons (R7.50 a packet) - all of this for under R45!

I then went home and forced the boyfriend to pig out on a smorgasbord of sweets with me. It was glorious and I loved all the sweets which were all of exceptional quality. The only thing I didn’t enjoy from my haul was the Sweet Puffy Popcorn which I found to be a little stale and too sweet for my liking.

All the sweets on offer in the store are Dick’s Sweets originals (with the exception of some additional commercial sweet products like Love Hearts sherbet sweets), and everything is manufactured in copper pots over a gas stove (to ensure consistency) and without added preservatives.

The Dick’s Sweets retail store is the ideal spot to visit for your next birthday party (kid or adult) and is probably one of the most affordable options when creating your own candy buffet or party packs.

The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 and on Sundays from 09:00  to 13:00.

Zahrah Their fudge and coconut ice is AMAZING! I got sweets from them for a candy bar at my wedding and people just couldn't get enough.
