I’ve never been a big cake-loving person. I’m that girl at the party who watches everyone else eat the cake while smashing mini chicken pies and sausage rolls into my face. For a while there I thought I had an aversion to all things sweet but then I realised that it wasn’t so much about the sweetness but rather about the fact that not all cakes are created equal. You see, even though my taste for savoury is far better tuned than my taste for all things sweet, give me a fantastic piece of cake or an amazing dessert and I will polish it off with relative ease. Which is exactly what happened with today’s find! The Whimsical Whisk sent me a few of their goodies to try and just like that I found a new-favourite go-to gal for all my sweet treat needs.
The Whimsical Whisk is the brain child of passionate baker Rezana who started out baking as a hobby. Growing up she was always the designated baker in the family and it wasn’t long before her family and friends started referring her to their friends and family for special occasions, and her casual hobby turned into a successful business. Today The Whimsical Whisk offers everything from kiddie’s birthday cakes, wedding cakes and special occasion cakes to a variety of homemade products like gourmet marshmallows, meringue kisses, chocolate truffles, cupcakes and decorative cookies.
The thing I love most about The Whimsical Whisk is that their creations are more than just a pretty face. The cakes are incredibly beautiful and creative but it is what’s inside that really counts. I got the chance to sample Rezana’s chocolate cake, dark chocolate marshmallows (R40 per dozen) and meringue kisses (R70 per dozen) and was blown away – and not just because she made me my very own customised Joburg’s Darling cake complete with logo and all!
I have to say Rezana’s chocolate cake was my most-favourite of the bunch – the stunning chocolate cake was decorated in white fondant icing and I couldn’t get over how moist and delicious it was. Then there were the vanilla meringue kisses – they were light, fluffy and dusted with chocolate – in short they were everything meringues should be and more. I’m not a massive fan of marshmallows but her dark chocolate marshmallow creations are quite special and would knock the socks off of any marshmallow loving lady (or man).
I was a little bummed that I didn’t get to sample her ALL Chocolate Cake – a chocolate cake covered in chocolate, filled with chocolate and topped with chocolate roses or delicious chocolate truffles – but judging by how good her basic chocolate cake is I’m quite sure this cake will steal the show at any special occasion.
If you’re hosting a fabulous birthday party for yourself or a loved one then The Whimsical Whisk is a great choice. They can create stunning themed cakes, cupcakes and more for the party and will even organise a cupcake decorating station for a unique dessert time twist. Cakes range from R350 and are priced according to your requirements.
What’s more, if you’re keen to learn from Rezana and steal a little bit of her magic for yourself then you can also enrol in one of her cake decorating workshops!
