Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve been on a Mexican food binge lately. Can you blame me? There’s nothing like a frozen margarita and a plate of tasty tacos! On Friday night, I visited my latest Mexican find – Café Mexicho.
Firstly, let me say that this eclectic Melville eatery is nothing fancy (that said in the best way possible), but it’s the perfect place to visit for a festive night out filled with fantastic food! At Café Mexicho, there are only two rules: arrive hungry (as the portions are gloriously generous), and make sure to Uber (because there’s loads of tequila involved).
I arrived with my boyfriend, Nik, on what was a cold, rainy evening and was instantly impressed by the awesome vibe inside the place – it was chock-full! Despite how cute and cosy Café Mexicho looks from the outside, it’s actually pretty enormous inside. They even have a designated area that you can use for special events like office parties or birthdays without a venue charge. Pretty epic, right?
We were seated at a comfortable little table in the main area near the bar. While we waited to be helped, we admired the loud green, pink and orange walls, and the festive Mexican décor.
To kick off the evening, I decided to order a strawberry frozen margarita and Nik a Corona Dry. With our drinks, we also ordered chilli poppers, which were ever so scrumptious – the batter was light and crispy, and they were super-stuffed with cheese. I think it’s safe to say that these were some of the best jalapeno poppers I’ve tasted!
For mains, I decided on the crispy tacos filled with fresh fish, while Nik went for a classic burrito especiale filled with chorizo mince. Our mains took quite a bit of time to reach our table, but luckily we were in no rush so this didn’t bother us too much. My tacos, a portion of three, were fantastic – very generously filled and flavourful. Nik said that his burrito was just as impressive.
To end off the evening, we were treated to a tequila demonstration and even got to sip on some of Café Mexicho’s most special tequilas – what a great experience!
If you’re a fan of Mexican fare, I urge you to check Café Mexicho out. It’s perfect for a boozy lunch or festive feast. I, for one, will certainly be returning to this lively spot with a group of friends for an evening of tasty grub and tequila shots. If you’ve already visited them, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
