A few years ago a friend of mine came out of the closest and finally confessed to me that she was in fact a full blown vegetarian. I was shocked. As much as I respected her for being able to share her life choice with me I just couldn’t fathom living in a world without meat. I am many things but there is one thing I will never be and that is a vegetarian ... mostly because, bacon. Besides my love for bacon I’m also a massive fan of steak. In Cape Town I had a love affair with a steak restaurant called The Hussar Grill and have yet to find something that matches up to that in Joburg, but on Tuesday night I discovered Galaxy Grill - the most amazing grill restaurant that not only serves the best steak ever but is also all kinds of fabulous!
Galaxy Grill is located in the Glen Shopping Centre and what I love most about it is that they’ve managed to effortlessly combine fine dining and a family-friendly vibe all in one restaurant. The restaurant offers two dining areas – one with fancy pants tablecloths, comfy armchair-style leather seats and booths for those who want an intimate fine dining experience, and one with dark wooden tables (sans tablecloths) and chairs for families with kids who are prone to getting a little messy and a little more noisy. I absolutely loved the overall decor of the spot which can only be described as industrial chic – the ruggedness of the exposed face brick walls, leather seats and wooden rafters are softened by big crystal chandeliers, white pillars and faux mirrored windows to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
But this joint isn’t just a pretty face; their menu is to die for too! Galaxy Grill serves up speciality steaks, gourmet burgers, seafood, curries, carvery items and pastas, as well as a special kiddie’s menu so there are plenty of options available to curb any hunger pangs. For starters my dining buddy and I tucked into Squid Heads (deep fried in tempura batter and served with sweet chilli) followed by the Bacon, Brie and Cranberry steak for mains. The starter dish was simply delicious but I have to say that the steak really stole the show! The combination of flavours was killer and the chef cooked my medium- rare steak to perfection. The steak came with an option of chips or warm veggies (creamed spinach and butternut) which was just as yummy. Because we were so full after our mains we opted to share a Tiramisu for dessert and were super excited to find that it was just as delicious as everything else that was put in front of us that night.
Galaxy Grill also offers amazing weekday and weekend specials in their dedicated all-you-can-eat buffet area. On weekends you’ll find a delicious buffet breakfast on offer (including bacon, Eggs Benedict, fruit, and sausages) for R70 for adults and R30 for children. On Monday nights you can dig into their Carvery buffet and Tuesdays see guests indulging in an Italian buffet at R75 for adults and R30 for children under 12. Wednesdays and Thursdays they serve a seafood buffet which will set you back R95 for adults and R30 for kids. And, if you’re worried about keeping your little ones under control don’t fear because the eatery boasts a huge kiddie’s play area with state of the art entertainment for little kids of all ages.
