I’ve visited quite a few hair salons lately and have been lucky enough to discover some real gems all over Joburg. Now, it’s no secret that I’m super picky when it comes to hair salons so you can trust me when I say that my latest find is a must-visit! Chemistry Hair Studio is the perfect place to go if your relationship with your hair is on the rocks and you’re desperate to get out of a hair rut! I absolutely loved the salon and I can’t wait to go back to see what they’ll do to my hair next.

The little hair salon, located in the Blue Bird Shopping centre in Birnam, is special in that it is a fully integrated Redken concept salon – which means they specialise in any and all Redken products and only use Redken on your hair. Because they’re not bogged down with a million products everyone in the salon is an expert on the products they use on your hair, and they can even concoct cocktails for you based on what your hair needs – genius! I went in for a wash, treatment and blow-dry and was blown away by the condition of my hair afterwards. When I arrived I had a quick consultation with my stylist Jenna. She whipped up a Redken Chemistry treatment just for me and my hair and then it was off to the shampoo room.

Please note that I said shampoo room – not just basin.  At Chemistry the shampooing experience is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I was a little shocked when I was led
into a separate little room decorated to resemble an inner- city at night – the room is softly light by sparkly fairy lights on the ceiling (made to look like the night sky), you sit on comfy recliner couches and soothing music is pumped into the room. This room is all about relaxation and the shampooing experience even includes a head, neck and shoulder massage – and I’m not talking a simple massage during your treatment - this was quite possibly the best massage I’ve ever had at a salon (for a moment there I considered asking them if I could just book to come back for regular massages).

After the heavenly shampoo experience Jenna led me to her station for another consultation on the blow-dry style I wanted. I opted to try something different from my usual sleek and straight style and opted for a style with more volume and little flicks and curls. I’m also quite skittish when it comes to blow-dries (I’ve been burnt so many times it’s scary) but Jenna was a whizz with the dryer and I felt completely comfortable the whole time. When she was done I was absolutely in love with my hair – the blow-dry was amazing and my hair felt super soft and I’m now addicted to Chemistry treatments.

Chemistry Hair Studio offers colouring, cutting, styling (including special updos and bridal hair), Brazilian blowouts, Great Length hair extensions and much more. I also love that they have a special Brazilian blowout product specially designed for pregnant moms (and ladies who just want a semi-permanent fix) which washes out after 10 washes!

Chemistry is open from 09:00 – 17:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 09:00 – 16:00 on Saturdays (closed on Mondays and Sundays) and every alternate Wednesday they are open until 20:00.

Crystal Hi Zinta - that is sad to hear. I've passed this on to the salon. Hopefully you can sort it out with them.

Zinta I did not have the same experience as you Crystal, I think it helps if you write an influential blog such as yourself, this way you will get top class service. I didn't have a massage with my wash, after explaining how I wanted my hair cut, the stylist told me she doesn't do Pretoria type hairstyles. I returned a few days later as I wasn't happy with the cut she chose to do, I was told that I must pay again. This was the most expensive cut I've ever had & they wanted me to pay again! I never went back & don't recommend this salon to anyone.

Melinda I have the best massage at this salon and Vicky my stylist is superb. Even their cuppachino is excellent.

Jess Andrews I visited chemistry hair studio recently and I had the most pleasurable experience I have had in a salon! The staff made me feel so comfortable and the hair stylist that took care of me knew exactly what I was looking for in terms of colour and hairstyle, I will defs be back!!!!

Gina I have also been to this salon and had a treatment which didn't take properly and cost a fortune. On return to tell the salon about this I was also given a very curt response. I agree with Gia. I will never go back and never recommend this salon to anyone.

Crystal Hi Gia,I'm sorry to heat that. I found their prices to be similar to most of other salons in Joburg and had lovely service when I was there.

Gia Conte I have been to this salon and to be honest they are over priced and the female owner is incredibly rude. I wouldn't recommend this place to any one.
