Darlings, I’m guessing you read the title of this post and thought; “Pffft, which truck did it fall off the back of?” But seriously, I’m not pulling your leg; you (yes, you reading this post) could be the proud owner of your very own designer handbag and you don’t have to sell your dog into slavery or rob a bank for it to be a reality, because I know a place where you can get your hands on one for as much as 60 percent off! So how can this all be true? Well, it’s all thanks to the lovely ladies at The Trunk. They’ve come up with the most brilliant business idea ever and I can’t thank them enough for it (I’m not kidding - I actually shrieked out loud when I first stumbled upon their website).
It all started when I was indulging in a good Facebook stalk - in amongst the make ups, break ups and selfies in my newsfeed their pretty vintage-inspired logo and the slogan ‘authentic vintage’ jumped out at me. I was compelled to click and boy am I glad I did, because what I found was a treasure trove of authentic designer handbags! The concept of The Trunk is quite simple really; the business is owned and run by a sisterly duo who absolutely love designer handbags and saw a gap in the South African market for the resale of pre-owned and much-loved designer handbags. Lauren and Katelyn are collectors of Louis Vuitton items and realised they needed a space to sell their handbags when they were lusting after another, newer piece. They also stumbled across loads of ladies on other not-so-secure websites who were trying to sell and purchase authentic designer handbags and so their website, TheTrunk.co.za, was born!
Now anyone from South African can go online and buy or sell designer handbags with the knowledge that their money and product will be safe and secure. The site allows those looking to sell their authentic designer handbags a secure space to sell them. Because, let’s be honest, these aren’t just handbags, they are investment pieces! Sellers can either sell their bags to The Trunk for resale or put them up for sale on consignment. When buying the bags and putting items on consignment the ladies make sure that they have the bag authenticated, priced and examined so that they can re-sell it again for a fair price.
For those wanting to buy a bag you will be happy to hear that their systems are strict as all the bags they have in stock are examined and categorised according to new, like new, gently used and well used. The bag is then photographed and loaded onto the website with as much detail as possible about the condition of the bag being supplied. Buyers can then browse the website for the bag of their dreams and enjoy discounts of between 20 percent and 60 percent! All purchases are made online and the bag is couriered to your door. If there was ever a reason to hide your credit card somewhere where you can’t find it, it is this website! Everytime I browse the site I manage to convince myself that I NEED one of the beautiful bags on the site - and then just before I get my credit card out I will myself to take a cold shower (true story).
I got to pop into the Trunk’s headquarters for a chat with the owners and a peek at their stock and almost died and went to heaven. The Trunk specialises in everything from Louis Vuitton, Prada and Burberry to Gucci, Celine and more. Currently their stock list mostly includes a range of Louis Vuitton originals and you can find everything from classic styles and limited edition pieces to small, medium and large handbags on their ‘shelves’. They also had a stunning Furla handbag available when I first checked out on the site for as little as R1950 but it has since been sold (sadface).
