I didn’t enjoy much about primary school, but I did enjoy the bake sales. I loved the tables (huge in my memory, but probably because I was so small) that were just packed with trays of deliciousness. The families’ specialties arrayed and arranged for tiny hands and pockets and bellies. This was the sense that I got walking into both the Ferndale branch and Sandton branch of Not Bread Alone. So much love and pride is evident in each crumb on each tray on each table.
I try not to be a pie and pastry person, I try to prefer salads and chickpeas; but let’s be honest, those things are so much more enjoyable when they are the supporting act for a dense, moorish pie or the predecessor to fat big brownies and cream puffs. Not Bread Alone is the perfect place to indulge in the things we don’t want to want.
The pies are out of this world. Probably the best I’ve ever had. They are heavy with meat, the pastry is buttery and not too thick and the taste is brilliant. I think I’ve had four in the two weeks since I first visited one of the branches, as well as two cream puffs, a tonne of bread AND a macadamia nut “blondie” (that’s a brownie, but with white chocolate - divine). The only issue is, the pies are entirely centred around meat. Luckily, most of their quiches are vegetarian and they look delicious!
I can strongly recommend popping in on a Saturday morning and treating your friends and family to some milk tart, cupcakes, fresh loaves and more!
