It is no secret that I am a huge fan of high tea – in the words of Joey Tribbiani; “What’s not to love? Custard, good. Jam, good. Meat, good.” And today I am beyond thrilled to let you know that I have found yet another fabulous place in Joburg to enjoy all the joys of high tea and it is smack bang in the middle of Sandton so the effort of getting there is almost minimal. And the great news, it’s at newly opened The Maslow hotel – one of my most-favourite places to hang out in Sandton. That’s right, from the beginning of October you and your girlfriends can visit what is arguably the most stylish place in Sandton for their newly launched Afternoon Tea. Here’s why you simply must check out The Maslow’s Afternoon Tea with your girlfriends... and soon!
The new Afternoon Tea is presented to guests by The Maslow’s incredible eatery, Lacuna which overlooks the hotel’s beautiful pool area. Guests can enjoy their tea and cake inside the swanky eatery or grab a table poolside and munch on sweet things while taking in the ambience of The Maslow’s beautiful gardens. But what makes their offering different from every other place that serves tea and cake? It’s quite simply really – firstly, their signature teas have been specially created for them by tea exports, Nigiro and secondly, the Afternoon Tea menu consisting of pastries, cakes and savoury delights has been carefully and loving created by Executive Chef Dallas Orr, who hails from The Table Bay (a Cape Town spot that is renowned for its High Tea). It doesn’t get any better than that Darlings!
The Maslow is also quick to point out that there is a difference between High Tea and Afternoon Tea (the latter is what they are offering guests). If you want to get technical then there are some big differences between the two. Back in the day Afternoon Tea was traditionally enjoyed by high society and featured dainty cakes, pretty confectionaries, fine porcelain and beautifully dressed guests whereas High Tea was more of a high-spirited affair where the family gathered together after the man of the household came home to enjoy hearts treats such as smoked ham, egg-and-bacon pie, potted shrimps, heavy cakes, and bread with butter, honey and jam. Of course, both included tea but it was enjoyed in very different ways. So, if it’s a wonderfully sophisticated affair you are looking for then The Maslow’s Afternoon Tea is definitely for you!
I got the chance to sample The Maslow’s three signature loose leaf teas including the Maslow Exclusive Blend (an elegant combination of Rooibos and Black Tea flavoured with Bergamot, Lemongrass and Blue Flowers), Gunpowder Temple of Heaven Green Tea (a refreshing tea with a slightly dry and fresh flavour) and Sakura Flavoured Green Tea (a green tea flavoured with Japanese and Sour Cherries). All three of the teas were divine but the Exclusive Rooibos blend was my favourite and I loved the sweet, citrus flavour of the tea. The teas were also served in beautiful tea pots and steeped right in front of us in order to allow for the tea to be as strong or as weak as we liked. The rest of the tea selection (13 in total) is also super impressive with a variety of green teas from China and Japan; flavoured green sencha tea; Milky Jin Shuan Oolong tea; a choice of black teas; fruit infusions; herbal infusions, and delicious flavoured rooibos teas all on offer.
As for the eats and treats the selection available includes gorgeous cakes, flavoured scones, pastries of note, mouth-watering savouries and delicate finger sandwiches. I also got to sample some things on the menu and can definitely vouch for the Franschhoek Smoked Salmon and Chive Crème Fraiche Sandwiches, Goat’s Cheese with Red Pepper Coulis, Petit Fours, and the Mini Praline and Pecan Cheesecake.
Afternoon Tea at The Maslow will be available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons between 14:30 and 17:30 starting in October 2014. There are three Afternoon Tea options available namely the Fashion Afternoon Tea (which includes the chef’s selection of indulgent dainties, a choice of loose leaf teas, and filter coffee - R225 per person | R125 per child under 12), the Champagne Tea (which includes all the spoils and a glass of Moët & Chandon Rosé – R390 per person), and the Methodé Cap Classique Tea (which includes a glass of Graham Beck Rosé instead of the Champagne – R280 per person).
