On 28 April, millions of To Kill A Mockingbird’ fans around the world will celebrate what would have been it’s Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s 91st birthday. In South Africa, the book is so popular with local audiences that Exclusive Books’ flagship restaurant, Social Kitchen & Bar, even has a cocktail named after the novel, the Tequila Mockingbird.
“The play on words with Tequila Mockingbird fits right in with the fun attitude of this cocktail, playing with the freshness and floral notes of the Don Julio and the mint,” explains Dom de Lorenzo, World Class winner and developer of the cocktail for the Social Kitchen & Bar. The book-inspired cocktail is a blend of Don Julio Reposado, Crème De Menthe and Lime.
The novel, originally published in 1960, tells a story of racism and stereotyping through the eyes of two children. Set in the Deep South in the 1930’s and based on a racial incident from Harper’s youth in 1934, the book is celebrated and loved by fans around the world.
And the best place to read the novel, and sip on the experience? Exclusive Book’s Social Kitchen & Bar in Hyde Park. Not only is it Johannesburg’s best restaurant to share conversations and hand-crafted foo, but it completes the epicurean adventure with simple food, inspired cocktails and a view fit for a King.
