There’s one recurring nightmare that every South African woman has at least a few times a year... bear with me as I paint you a picture. Your friend comes to lunch wearing THE most stunning jacket, dress, jeans - whatever - that you’ve ever seen in your entire life. As she sits down you start fantasizing about yourself wearing said piece of clothing - looking gorgeous, camera’s flashing, people screaming your name, the usual. You nonchalantly ask her where she got it so you can sneakily go off and buy it without her knowing, and then she says the worst thing any woman can say at this moment: “Oh this? I bought it in London.” I’ve literally been brought to tears by those words on numerous occasions and in my friendship circle it’s usually followed by “at Topshop.” I hate my friends and their jet setting tendencies.
But now it’s time for me to get my own back... the next time I visit my friends in Cape Town I will be kitted out from head to toe in high street gear and when they ask where I got all the fabulous things I’m wearing I’ll smugly answer; “Oh this? I got it in Joburg... at Topshop!” Yes, that’s right Jozi - Topshop has finally arrived in Joburg and they’ve decided to open their doors at the shopping Mecca of Joburg – Sandton City. The store can be a little hard to find – I found it by following the trail of white Topshop shopping bags walking past but you might not be so lucky. The shop is nestled away in a corner of the mall, next to Doppio Zero and not too far from YDE - blink and you might just miss it.
Once you’re inside don’t do what I did and run around like a crazy person manhandling all the merchandise. Apparently, that’s frowned upon. Another word of advice: don’t go ballistic, grab every pretty thing you see, and make a beeline for the till. You will die of shock when you get there. Because despite what you’ve heard about Topshop having ridiculously stunning clothing at ridiculously low prices, this is Topshop South Africa and unfortunately we’re not being treated to the same prices they enjoy overseas. Dresses average at around R800, skirts around R400, blouses around R300, and shoes around R700. But, that doesn’t mean you won’t find a few great deals in store – they’ve got some stunning handbags and accessories at reasonable prices and their lingerie section is stocked with quirky and well priced bottoms that’ll have you shrieking with delight.
The store is definitely a one-stop-shop for all things fashion related – on their shelves you’ll find handbags, shoes, accessories, lingerie, denims, casual wear, formal wear, and even make up. And, besides the slightly high price tags I for one am ecstatic that Topshop is here – it’s a fantastic place to get your hands on some super trendy items. And the great news is our SA stores are directly aligned with the UK counterpart so we’ll have access to the same collections that are filling the rails at the brand’s famous London stores!
All I can say is... go forth and shop!
