Recently, I’ve developed a brand-new obsession. Don’t get me wrong, make-up will always be my number one - but right now, make-up brushes have been the items that I just cannot resist! Sure, I could just use my fingers to apply foundation and concealer (like I have been doing for the last decade), but there is something more glamorous and professional about doing it with brushes! The trick is you just need to know which brush is used for what and off you go!

I’m going to give you a crash course on make-up brushes. There are many different types of make-up brushes out there, but there’s ones that are absolute necessities for your make-up bag and routine! From face, to eyes and finishing touches, here’s the low-down on make-up brushes you need to get.

First things first, there are THREE brushes that are essential for applying your face make-up:

1. The Foundation Brush

This brush is soft yet holds its shape, and is perfect for applying liquid foundations. For best results when applying your foundation, be sure to use circular motions for a seamless finish.

2. The Powder Brush

It’s just the tool you need to set your foundation with loose powder.  All you do is dab your brush into your powder, tap off the excess (we don’t want to look like a ghost, now do we?), and dust the brush around your face. You can also use a Kabuki brush to achieve the same finish.

3. The Blusher Brush

Last but not least, the final step to your face make-up is blush, so cue the Blusher Brush! This fluffy brush is perfect for giving you those rosy cheeks. Not only does it pick up just the right amount of product, but it also blends it out to ensure that it looks natural.

Onto my favourite part – the THREE brushes you need for your eye make-up:

1. The Rounded Shadow Brush

An absolute staple to add to your make-up bag is the Rounded Shadow Brush. This is a basic eye make-up brush to apply eyeshadow onto the lid, crease, and brow bone.

2. The Fluffy Blending Brush

Once you have put on your eyeshadow, you will need a Fluffy Blending Brush to blend out the harsh lines of your eyeshadow. Harsh lines are a big beauty no-no!

3. An Angled Liner Brush

And then, to add a little definition and drama to your eyes, be sure to invest in an Angled Liner Brush. This brush is all about precise lining and is a definite must-have! We suggest getting more than one, as this brush is perfect for applying gel eyeliner (if you want to round off your look with a winged eye), and for shaping eyebrows with absolute precision!

Now, if you’re looking for a brand that offers animal-cruelty free, synthetic, good quality brushes, then be sure to try out GOSH Cosmetics’ range of make-up brushes. They may cost a pretty penny (between R170 and R240 per brush), but they’re oh-so worth it! You can buy them at an Edgars store near you.
