I’ve been on a bit of a health kick lately, Darlings. When I tell people this, their faces seem to twist into some very … well, interesting shapes as they picture tasteless boiled chicken and boring broccoli – but they couldn’t be more wrong! While health is obviously very important, with our hectic Joburg lifestyles, it can often take a backseat … most of the time, this means convenient but not-so-healthy meals … until now! I’ve gone around to some fab food joints on your behalf (someone’s gotta do it – tough job, right?) to round up the best places to pick up healthy lunches, in-between all the rushing around.
1. Kauai
Kauai is an old favourite that’s recently had a makeover! The brand has been re-launched with a whole new look and feel at its Rosebank branch and, of course, a new, health-focused menu. Pop on over to their production line and assemble your own salad in a flash – go as wild as your imagination (or budget) will allow!
If you’ve got a couple of minutes to spare (or you’re using Kauai as a temporary office), why not sit down and have a healthy, hearty omelette made with free range eggs? Darlings, I had one just the other day, filled with protein-packed trout for a real energy boost, and it was divine! Top this off with a smoothie and you’re good to go – energy restored.
Address: Rosebank Mall, Joburg.
2. Nu
You can’t go wrong at Nu! This super-healthy spot offers all kinds of good-for-you options. You’ve got to try their protein pancake! Made with whey, blueberries, walnuts and cinnamon and drizzled with honey, it tastes naughty but it’s actually oh-so-nice.
Their salad options are pretty drool-worthy too! Consider this one, aptly named the Pick-Me-Up, and tell me you don’t think it sounds nutritious and delicious: quinoa, cucumber, rosa tomatoes, sweet corn, celery, mint, hemp seeds and pea shoots with a lemon and olive oil dressing. Delish!
Address: Waterfall Lifestyle Centre, Corner Maxwell and Woodmead Drives, Woodmead, Joburg.
3. Life Grand Café
Life Grand Café is a great all-round restaurant but, if you’re pressed for time and can’t take a seat, make a beeline for the salad bar. Grabbing a take away salad here will take you about five minutes, if even (okay, longer if you’re indecisive like me!). Here’s how it works: once you’ve picked between small and large, you get a basic base of lettuce, tomato and cucumber and get to add four tasty toppings – it’s as simple as that! You can add more but you’ll be charged so don’t go too wild or you’ll break the bank.
There’s also the option of adding a protein like chicken or fish if you’re in need of something more filling. Regular toppings include Danish feta, sundried tomatoes, butternut and sweet potato, green beans, broccoli and beetroot. Tough choices lie ahead!
Address: Hyde Park Shopping Centre, Corner William Nicol Drive and 6th Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, Joburg.
4. Krunch
In the centre that best mimics busy life, Sandton City, Krunch will sort you out. Don’t be fooled by the fact that it’s in the food court, in-between some slightly unhealthier options … this place screams health! You can have their main meals as salads or sandwiches, make your own creation or, if you’re really in a rush, grab a coconut water and one of their health bars … now that’s an on-the-go snack you don’t have to feel guilty about!
Krunch also offers a wide range of superfoods that can be added to your meals, like goji berries, chia seeds and hemp seeds … talk about an extra boost!
Address: Sandton City, 83 Rivonia Road, Sandton, Joburg.
5. Rocket Express
Speaking of Sandton, if you can’t get to the mall, there’s an amazing little salad bar on Maude Street … Rocket Express, perhaps you’ve heard of it? The best part about it is that you can go with one of the classics or create your own salad!
All you have to do is pick a base – personally I love the cous cous – select the ingredients you would like to add at the counter and top it off with a dressing of your choice! You can even splurge on a delicious smoothie to go with your meal … but don’t go overboard or things could get a tad pricy.
Address: Nedbank Building, Maude Street, Sandton, Joburg.
