The seasons are changing, Darlings … chillier days are definitely on the way. What I’m trying to say is that it’s that time of year again when you need to learn how to dress a trendy autumn ahead.
I don’t know about you, but I adore autumn … the cold, the colours, the smells, and being able to curl up next to a fire in a sweatshirt with a pumpkin spice latte in hand. Just the thought makes me feel all fuzzy inside! Here are my top must-have garments for dressing well for the season ahead.
1. Biker Jacket
Biker jackets are pretty much the wardrobe staple of the millennium … and lately, designers are getting very creative! From prints to embellishments, these edgy jackets are transitioning from chic to plain old sweet. For autumn, I suggest going for a well-fitted biker jacket. The more fitted, the better, in fact. The oversized leather jacket was a 80s trend … and I wasn’t the biggest fan. I find that wearing a biker jacket over a plain bodycon dress instantly glams up the outfit.
My Top Pick: Need For Speed Cropped Biker Jacket by Goldie (R699).
2. Boyfriend Jeans
Boyfriend jeans started off a few years ago and are now a key staple that every girl needs in her closet. These baggy, relaxed jeans are not only comfortable, but uber-chic. However, because they’re so baggy, it’s important you keep the rest of your outfit fitted. I love styling my pairs with a plain bodysuit, a biker jacket and a pair of leather ankle boots.
My Top Pick: Slashed Boyfriend Jeans by Glamorous (R399).
3. Leggings
Leggings may not be pants, but they’re certainly a must-have! I love leggings … they’re so versatile and amazingly comfy. And there are loads of different styles available, from plain colours to funky prints. You can even buy ones with edgy embellishments like leather or zippers. I love pairing leggings with a button-up blouse, a statement necklace and a pair of ankle boots.
My Top Pick: Kamin Leggings by Vila (on sale for R232).
4. Over-The-Knee Boots
These fabulous boots are for the fashion darling! They’re not for everyone, but personally, I love them … and I’m happy to see they’re quickly becoming a huge autumn trend. If you’re not sure you can pull them off, I urge you to give them a try … trust me, you’ll love so hip that you’ll wonder why you didn’t convert sooner! Over-the-knee boots look gorgeous with a chunky knit sweat and leggings, or a fun dress and a wide-brimmed hat.
My Top Pick: Over-The-Knee Boots Grey/Red by Madison Montgomery (on sale for R529).
5. Studded Bag
This autumn is jam-packed with gorgeous carryalls to woo even the most discerning fashionista … but one of my favourites is definitely the studded handbag. From sturdy satchels to the latest take on bucket bags, there are lots of different kinds to choose from. I find that a spacious studded bag is the prettiest and most wearable of the season, but a handbag is a personal piece so you may beg to differ.
My Top Pick: Silverth Bag by Aldo (R699).
6. Statement Necklaces
One of my favourite fashion trends right now is the big, bold statement necklace. The fact that just one piece of jewellery can alter your entire look is pretty awesome in my opinion … the power of the necklace is strong! Pair one with a T-shirt and jeans to mix glamour with grunge, or use it to accessorise a plain button-up shirt. If you have heaps of hair, put it up in a bun or sleek ponytail so that your necklace can take the spotlight.
My Top Pick: Lulie Necklace by Vero Moda (on sale for R127).
7. Belts
Offering a swift and easy route into autumn this year, the tightly drawn belt signals new-season nous. The dramatic gilt buckle, on the other hand, is a strong contender for autumn’s standout accessory. Wear your belt on your waist to flatter your figure in an instant. This tip is especially great for ladies with curvier hips. I love wearing a feminine belt to dress up a plain winter dress.
My Top Pick: Mixed Plait Mesh Chain Melt by New Look (R199).
8. Tuxedo Jacket
The tuxedo jacket is a classic piece that’s been around forever … but the great thing about it is that with each season, new fabulous ways to wear it emerge! While it’s a wardrobe staple for all ladies, it’s completely up to you whether you’re into an oversized or shrunken jacket … both work fabulously. Layer it over a basic T-shirt for a casual look, or dress it up with statement jewellery.
My Top Pick: Tuxedo Blazer Taupe by Utopia (R499).
9. Trench Coat
Since Thomas Burberry first created the first iteration of the now timeless design, the trench coat has remained a cornerstone of any well-edited outerwear collection. It’s a must-have investment piece that works on anyone and everyone. For autumn, I recommend going for one in a bright colour of a different texture. Nylon trench coats are actually pretty stylish! To dress us a basic trench, simply add a fab belt.
My Top Pick: Aurelia Jacket by Y.A.S (on sale for R719).
10. Faux-Fur Stole
Lend a touch of true ladylike goodness to your outfit with the help of a faux-fur stole. To make this autumn runway trend wearable, I recommend shrugging it over your shoulder … it will make the garment look and feel more modern. It looks elegant over pretty much any winter piece of clothing, but I find it especially chic over a long trench coat … an outfit idea to save for the colder days!
My Top Pick: Faux Fur Capelet Black by ELIGRE (R149).
