Darlings I just discovered the most amazing ceramics brand! If you’re looking for something super cute and incredibly quirky to spruce up your home, desk or a friend or family member's home then you have to check out Sootcookie today! Seriously, if you only have one open space at home or need to get rid of something else to make way for something from the Sootcookie range then do it! Here’s why I’m completely obsessed with this beautiful range from local designer Tanya Laing.

If you’ve never heard of Sootcookie then you are about to sit up and take notice because this brand is as lekker and local as it gets. The ceramics brand gets its name from the Afrikaans word soetcookie meaning “sweet biscuit” – the spelling difference in the name (soot instead of soet) hints at the fact that the oh-so-quirky goodies in the range are baked in a kiln. Looking around the Sootcookie studio I quickly realised that the name suits the ceramics label to a T (funny that) - the shelves in the studio are choc-o-block with all sorts of funky designs with a local twist.

In the studio you will find everything from purely ornamental pieces to beautiful and functional ranges that you can incorporate into your everyday life at home. On the sculptural side there is a range of Sootcookie animals or staples to choose from – these are collector’s items of sorts and each season Tanya releases the same staple animals (bears, rabbits, buck and owls) but with a different take each time. With these animals Tanya plays with the concept of dark and light and takes what should be cute and cuddly and adds a bit of a dark twist. I’m a huge fan of the mystical, yet modern rabbits in their track-suit-esque astronaut getups and would love to have one of these on my desk at work.

But it doesn’t stop there; if the staples don’t float your boat then you’ll be happy to hear that Tanya also introduces new and funky sculptural designs all the time. The sculptural range also includes some quirky eye-catching pieces in different styles, like life-sized ceramic boxing gloves, high-top sneakers, paper jets, ice cream cones, miniature cars and more. Each item is special in its own way and I love how Tanya manages to turn almost mundane and everyday items into conversation pieces.

And then there’s the functional range – which is just too cool for words! This range includes various ranges of ceramic picnic ware made to look like paper plates, polystyrene cups, take-away boxes, plastic buckets and tinfoil trays. My favourite part about this range is the juxtaposition between the idea of ceramic keepsakes and throw-away objects like paper and plastic – most of the plates, cups and trays are made to look as if they are something from your grandmother’s kitchen cupboard, yet they’re also made to resemble items you’d ordinarily find in the bin after a picnic. It’s just amazing how she’s managed to turn the concept of throwaway items into something precious and cherished. My favourites in this range are the red floral ‘polystyrene’ cups and the blue vintage beach look ‘paper plates’.

The Sootcookie range is available to Joburgers through online store Utique and ranges from R100 – R1200 per piece – depending on the size and design of the object. Visit the online store using the website link found in pink box at the top right hand corner of this post.
