Why You Should (Or Shouldn’t) Be Using Dermalogica

Girls (and guys): today’s beauty review is going to be a little bit different than usual because I’ve reviewed a well-known skincare range that we are all aware of but, like me, probably never got around to trying. For the past few years I’ve been on the hunt for THE skin care range to end all my skin problems and Dermalogica has come up in a number of conversations. However I was a little reluctant to try it because of the sheer amount of cash I had to put down to try it out. But, two months ago I finally went for a Dermalogica facial and skin mapping session and got my hands on their Ultra Calming range and I was determined to settle the argument once and for all – should I be using Dermalogica on my skin - and should you?

Before I continue I feel I have to state that I’m no expert on all of this stuff. I’m just a girl standing in front of a skin care range, asking it to love her (skin). I’ve tried countless ranges of skin care products, and while there have been some amazing discoveries they haven’t all worked for me and my skin. So, instead of telling you why Dermalogica is so fabulous and why you should use it I’ve decided to give you my experience with the Ultra Calming range and let you make up your own mind.

I started my Dermalogica experience with a facial at Sorbet in Paulshof and, after a skin mapping session (this is where the therapist takes a thorough look at your skin under a bright light and determines what products she would recommend for your skin), it was decided that the Ultra Calming range was my best bet at getting beautiful skin. Once this was determined it was time for the facial to begin! The facial saw the therapist use the entire range on my face including the Precleanse (R450), Ultracalming Cleanser (R430), Barrier Repair (R510), Daily Microfoliant (R770), Ultracalming Relief Masque (R560), Ultracalming Mist (R480) and Solar Defense Booster spf50 (R575) and my skin felt lovely afterwards.

But then I started to use the products at home on a daily basis and found it was difficult to stay committed to the routine. Firstly, I’m a low maintenance girl of note and my skin care regime before Dermalogica consisted of a cleanser, moisturiser and the occasional mask, but when I started the Dermalogica review I suddenly had seven products to deal with (seven!) and it was difficult to wrap my head around. I also found that while I absolutely adored some of the products others didn’t quite do it for me. The Precleanse, Ultracalming Cleanser and Solar Defense Booster spf50 were pure winners in my eyes but I wasn’t a fan of the Barrier Repair, Daily Microfoliant or the Ultracalming Mist.

Here’s why: The Precleanse is probably my most-favourite product in the range as it’s an incredible way to get all the make-up and grime off your face before cleansing. I also loved the consistency and feel of this product and you use the tiniest amount so it lasts for ages! The Ultracalming Cleanser is also fabulous and it’s the gentlest cleanser I’ve ever used. I love the way it makes my skin feel and I would continue to use this product as the non-foaming cleanser is fabulous for my super sensitive skin. I’m also in love with the Solar Defense Booster spf50 as you can add it to your moisturiser or foundation to give it an extra dash of UV defense. The sunscreen also feels ultra moisturisering and I love that it doesn’t feel sticky and thick on your skin.

And then there were the products I wasn’t obsessed with – the Daily Microfoliant is punted as a gentle, daily-use exfoliating product, but I found that every time I used it my skin felt raw and over-sensitive all day and even stung when I applied other products afterwards (even when I only used it once a week). The Barrier Repair, a waterless moisturiser, didn’t do much to relieve the inflammatory triggers caused by the exfoliator (its primary purpose) and I found it wasn’t nearly moisturising enough for my skin. Then there’s the Ultracalming Mist – this product is punted as a miracle hydrating product to be used all day to help relieve your skin from sensitivity flare-ups - while it was great I found the DMK mist to be much more effective in hydrating and soothing my skin.

So what does this all mean? It means that I’ve come to realise that Dermalogica is fabulous – but not for everyone. I’ve spoken to women who adore the Ultracalming Mist and wouldn’t be able to live without it, and women who don’t like their sunscreen while I love it and that’s the key – we all need to customise our skin routines to suit our skin, and our likes and dislikes. When it comes to Dermalogica I suggest you make up your own mind; go for a skin-mapping session with one of their experts, ask to sample the products they recommend in store, get a second opinion by visiting another Dermalogica expert and then pick the products you think will work best for you.
