I’ve always been very territorial about my hair – mostly because I’ve gone to hair salon after hair salon enduring one shocking cut and style after another. I’ve fallen prey to scissor-happy stylists who don’t understand the words: “I’d like to keep most of the length” and have left a salon looking like a cast member of the Jersey Shore when I made the mistake of nodding when asked: “Would you like me to add a little volume?” Now before I visit a new hairdresser, I pretty much do a full background check on the salon before I go anywhere near the place. I put my tresses on the line to try out the new GHDesigns in Nicolway Bryanston and my hair has never been happier!
When I think of visiting the hair salon the words ‘relaxing’ and ‘pampered’ don’t really come to mind. I was blessed with a thick mop of hair that is very difficult to tame, and I’m still working through the childhood trauma of spending an hour in a stylist’s chair while she tore through the knots in my hair with one of those tiny round detangling combs. But, GHDesigns have completely changed my view and showed me that getting your hair done doesn’t have to be a horror show.
From the moment you walk into the salon you are waited on hand and foot by the staff. They make sure you are completely comfortable at all times – drinks, massages, and tasty snacks are the order of the day at GHDesigns. When I arrived my hair stylist, Dustin, sat me down in his chair and discussed what I wanted to do with my hair. We chatted about adding a little colour with highlights and creating some shape with a layered cut. I was then offered a drink and showed a very comprehensive drinks menu (they’ve got everything from coffee to wine) from which to choose my poison.
One thing I loathe about hair salons is that once you are in that chair they completely forget about you – there’s nothing worse than sitting awkwardly under a dryer with nothing to do but stare at yourself in the mirror. But at GHDesigns the staff are constantly making sure that you are catered for with magazines to read, drinks to quench your thirst, and delicious nougat to snack on. As I moved from the stylist’s chair, to the shampoo area, to the dryer my magazines of choice, drink, and handbag followed me every step of the way – I didn’t have to lift a finger! I’ve never felt more relaxed in a hair salon – I even got a 10 minute head, neck, and shoulder massage from the shampooist.
More importantly Dustin is also a genius with colour and scissors – I’ve never been happier with a cut and colour than after leaving his chair. He managed to fix my last disastrous cut – I’d gotten quite good at ignoring the hideousness of it all – and I left in love with my hair. Not too short, no Snooki poofs and no traumas.
