I hope you’re ready for today’s find … because it’s guaranteed to add some spice to your life! This may go without saying (mainly because I’m Indian), but I love my curries! However, I don’t often eat out at Indian restaurants … so I was more than intrigued at the thought of dining at Satkar – a quaint little eatery in Melville.
Now I’m sure everyone (or almost everyone) has tried a bunny chow or a curry at least once … but believe me when I say that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Indian cuisine. Satkar is an example of that! My fiancé Brenden and I decided to pay them a visit for dinner recently … needless to say we opted to eat inside rather than in their outdoor area (we are smack-dab in the middle of winter after all).
The restaurant itself has a very private, cosy vibe to it – and I really liked that about it. For drinks, Brenden opted for plain old water while I decided to go with something different – Sweet Lassi (for those of you that don’t know what it is, it’s basically a mix of yoghurt, water, sugar and a touch of spice … heavenly!).
Satkar truly lives up to its name, offering dishes that you won’t see on your average Indian restaurant menu – from Paneer Butter Masala and Navratan Korma to Lamb Daal Gosht and more! Oh, and don’t stress if you don’t know anything about these dishes – the waiters are more than happy to give you a breakdown, plus, there are a few images of the dishes at the bottom of the page in the menu.
For starters, we decided to try out Pakoda (R20) (which comes in three varieties – Potato, Brinjal and Cauliflower). It also comes with three delicious sauces. For the mains, we went nuts! We had Butter Chicken (R75) and Lamb Bhuna Gosht (R89) – both of which comes with Basmati rice, as well as Butter Naan (R12) and Laccha Paratha (R14). Both the curries were amazing – you could just taste the different flavours and the meat was really tender. (One of the things I love about Indian cuisine is the aroma of the different spices!)
Sadly, by the end of the evening, we were both stuffed … so talk of dessert was just non-existent. (We knew we shouldn’t have gone overboard but everything looked so good!) However, we will be going back for the dessert very soon!
