Darlings I hope you’re ready for another year of fabulous finds because we are gearing up to get you even more excited about exploring Joburg than ever before. To get the ball rolling I’ve got a stunning summer find for you all to enjoy. Today’s find brings back some extra special childhood memories of growing up in Cape Town for me, and when I discovered it in Joburg I almost fainted from excitement. So without further ado I bring you the awesomeness that is Gatti’s Ice Cream. All I can say is get excited because your world is about to be rocked!

Before you think I’m about to sell you yet another fancy pants, over-priced gourmet ice cream think again because this stuff isn’t that at all – it’s so much better than that! Gatti’s Ice Cream is the stuff childhoods are made of and it’s so affordable it’s ridiculous. What I love about Gatti’s is that it’s a down to earth type brand that is all about fun and family. The ice cream brand is huge in Cape Town and it has become well known for selling affordable, great quality ice cream lollies, sorbets and scooped ice cream to the masses. The brand also has a bit of a cult following as it isn’t available in massive supermarkets but is rather sold through small vendors (think corner cafes and the like) and Gatti’s Ice Cream factory stores.

What makes Gatti’s truly special, for me, is their ice cream lollies. They come in every flavour imaginable and there’s just no getting over how delicious they are. Some of my favourite ice lolly flavours include Playtime Lolly (a delicious combo of spliced orange and raspberry juices dipped in milk chocolate), Fruit Sherbet Granadilla (a mouth-watering granadilla sherbet ice lolly), Twice As Nice (toffee ice cream with a chocolate fudge centre dipped in milk chocolate) and Surf Joy (vanilla ice cream spliced with iced juicy orange flavoured water ice). What makes them even better is the price – you’re looking at anything between R4 and 8 for an ice lolly (that’s practically free!)

I love their ice cream lollies so much I found myself craving it almost on a weekly basis when I moved to Joburg. I searched everywhere for a replacement to the ice lollies, trying mediocre brand after mediocre brand, but there was just nothing quite like it. I was just about to call Gatti’s headquarters in Cape Town to inform them that I would do anything for them if they would just send me one box of my favourite ice lollies when I discovered the best thing ever - a Gatti’s Ice Cream shop in Honeydew!

It was like it was sent just for me and I immediately ran into the shop to make double sure it wasn’t a mirage. I was elated to see that it was in fact a bonafide Gatti’s Ice Cream factory store and all my favourites were there just waiting to be eaten and enjoyed. I have to admit that I was extremely tempted to have one of those movie montage moments where I begin throwing ice creams in the air, but I quickly noticed that the shop owner was giving me some odd looks and so opted to not do that and just buy a mixed box of my favourite lollies for R120 (That’s R4 an ice lolly!). I’m ashamed to say I went through the entire box in less than a month but it was pretty much the best few weeks of my life.

Do yourself a favour and head through to this spot today and invest in a box of their yummy lollies. You won’t regret it. Say hello to .

*UPDATE* In January Gatti's Honeydew re-opened under new management so feel free to pop in for your ice cream fix soon!

Billy This is not a Gatti distributor. They buy fron Fordsburg, and after adding a HUGE markup, sell it to you.

Kanya Love it! Holidays meant Gatti's ice cream growing up in PE, the box of Summer Pine wouldn't last too long! I discovered the shop too in December and bought a box for my son's 1st birthday party! The family tradition continues :)
