With my wife’s birthday coming up, I needed to plan a romantic evening … and fast! Well as it turns out – a visit to Winehouse Bompas became the perfect combination of decadence and deliciousness!

Believe it or not, our evening didn’t start at Winehouse Bompas … we were first treated to a lift by Audi, who picked us up in an S8 and took us to the restaurant (let’s just say we arrived in style)! Never mind the magnificent handling capabilities of the car and the fact that it can do 0-100 in 4.1 seconds (the usual guy stuff) … this beast is best experienced with a chauffeur! It’s the only way to truly be able to appreciate all the comforts and extras offered. Plus, this car ride was the first time we didn’t mind being stuck in Joburg traffic as we were treated to back massages on the way to dinner. Talk about luxury! (We could definitely get used to this!)

Once we arrived (and begrudgingly got out of the car), we took in the look and feel of the restaurant (and it just screams romance)! We knew immediately that we were in for a treat!

Choosing what to eat proved to be quite tough but here’s what we decided on: for starters, we had soy roasted duck and shiitake wontons, served with a spiced duck broth and field mushrooms as well as seared fillet carpaccio, which came with butternut, bone marrow and sherry vinegar. For mains, we went for lamb loin, served with parsley and gooseberries and Namibian kabeljou, complemented by kerala curry, sultanas and cauliflower. Everything was gourmet to the tee! As total MasterChef junkies (and we’re not ashamed to admit it), Barbara and I probably appreciated the meal more than the average diner there (at least we’d like to think so!).

We barely had room for dessert but couldn’t pass it up – everything just sounded too good! We picked the Chai spiced affogato, served with biscotti, pistachios and roasted apple, and the “banana split” with dark chocolate, nuts and caramel.

The creativity and meticulous balance of flavour in the dishes was incredible and left us wanting to return as soon as possible! (I may have also hinted to Barbara that my birthday is coming up soon.)

If you’re looking to spoil a loved one or impress someone important (a place to take the in-laws, perhaps?), this place is a must! But keep this in mind: if you want to eat what we did, you’d better visit Winehouse Bompas soon … because their menu changes with the seasons.

Joburg's Darling Hi Meryl. I believe everything was organised through Bompas. You can give them a call and ask for Amanda. Regards

Meryl Good Day How did you organize the whole package? With the car, massage and dinner? And what was the cost please? I would really love to do this for my husband on a special occasion. It sounds amazing. Please let me know. Thank you
