Social media has been abuzz recently about Kota Joe, a fabulous fast-food brand taking on the East Rand by storm. I recently paid the Edenvale branch a visit to find out for myself what all the fuss is about … and let’s just say that my sweet tooth was certainly satisfied.

Now, as I’ve already mentioned, Kota Joe is a roadhouse, so getting out of your car isn’t required (how great is that?!), however I decided to enjoy my meal inside and check the place out. It isn’t anything fancy … just a typical fast food-looking place, I’d say. But the comfortable, colourful interior gives Kota Joe a somewhat trendy feel … I loved it.

On the menu, you’ll find everything your fast-food-loving heart desires … from killer milkshakes and ‘Kotas’, to pizzas and burgers. What are Kotas, you ask? Simply-put, they’re quarter loaves of bread stuffed with a yummy filling … something like the lovechild of a filled baguette and a bunny chow, I’d say. Yup, totally drool-worthy!

I’ll admit, Darlings, my visit was purely based on their tempting milkshakes, but considering I’d made the schlep all the way from the north (okay, it’s not that far) to the east side of Jozi for a roadhouse, I decided to try out one of their delicious-sounding food options as well.

It was a tough choice between a pizza and a burger, but in the end I decided on a pizza (I’m a real pizza addict … not sure if you’ve picked that up yet). My cheesy, doughy box of goodness reached my table in good time, and I’ve got to say that for the super-affordable price, it was downright delicious!

After scoffing down most of my pizza, I was ready to indulge in one of Kota Joe’s perfectly crafted milkshakes that I’d been seeing and hearing about for so long. With so many options to choose from, including Banana & Strawberry, Horlicks & Fudge, Ferrero Rocher & Oreo, Nutella & Banana, Salted Caramel, Custard & Jelly, Cookies & Cream, Peppermint Crisp, Tempo, Diddle Daddle and Zoo Biscuit, let’s just say that deciding on just one was pretty tough.

Eventually, I opted for the Zoo Biscuit shake … and boy, am I glad I did! It was just dreamy … love at first sip, I’d say. I can’t wait to return to try out some of their other gourmet flavours (I’m looking you in the eye, Ferrero Rocher & Oreo!). Darlings, Kota Joe is just the place to visit to satisfy your sugar cravings, or to treat yourself without burning a hole in your pocket. You can trust that it’s well worth the drive.
