Darlings, over the weekend I discovered a real hidden gem … and I’m so excited to tell you all about it! I’d made Sunday breakfast plans with a girlfriend of mine who’s just moved to Joburg from Cape Town, and so I wanted to take her somewhere lovely and tranquil with an exciting breakfast menu. After hearing so many good things about Urban Angel Café, I thought we’d give the place a try … and I’m so happy we did! This tucked away spot is so cute that it hurts, Darlings.
Urban Angel Café is a relatively new spot situated in the Boskruin Office Park, which is just behind Boskruin Shopping Centre. It’s pretty easy to miss unless you’re looking for it … you have to drive into the shopping centre parking and drive to the left of Nineteen 69 to the boomed off entrance to the office park to get to it … but it’s well worth the little hunt! From the minute you step inside, the café’s passion for good food and healthy living becomes abundant, hence all of the fragrant fresh bakes and delectable sweet treats on display.
My friend and I arrived and were seated outside in the breezy outdoor section. The atmosphere was lovely … peaceful yet engaging. Our kind and friendly waitress talked us through their extensive list of beverages on offer, and I’ll have you know that everything sounded so good that we decided to order a few different drinks to taste. Between the Raw Chocolate Smoothie, the Red Iced Tea, and the three raw juices – one green, one orange, and one beetroot, I must say that the chocolate smoothie was by far my favourite … but everything was divine! The juices were wonderfully refreshing and of top-notch quality … I’m big into juicing so you can trust me on that.
To eat, my friend and I both ordered the Eggs Benedict – two free-range poached eggs on sourdough bread topped with crispy bacon and a good dollop of hollandaise sauce. The dishes came out quickly, and were gorgeously presented. I’m really fussy about having my poached eggs cooked soft, and I’m happy to report that my eggs were perfect! It’s not often that I don’t send a plate of Eggs Benedict back due to overcooked eggs. Overall, the dish was creamy and downright delicious … we both enjoyed every mouthful.
Still peckish after our eggs dish, my friend and I decided we’d treat ourselves to a few other mouth-watering delights on the menu (we restarted our New Year’s resolutions on the 1st of February, okay?). The manager was kind enough to put together the most beautiful tasting platter that consisted of a couple of different dishes.
Everything was just delectable, from the buttermilk flapjacks served with raw honey, banana and yoghurt, to the freshly baked banana bread served with mascarpone cream cheese icing. I also thoroughly enjoyed the savoury eats on the platter … the cauliflower rosti, topped with fresh avocado, bacon and a poached egg was especially tantalising!
All in all, I had a wonderful time at Urban Angel Café. They really do cover all bases … top-notch service, an extensive menu, outrageously good drinks and eats, and an intimate ambiance. It’s the perfect spot to tuck into a delicious breakfast or to enjoy a long, lazy lunch. If you haven’t visited them yet, be sure to do so soon, Darlings!
