As much as I love Joburg every now and then I get the urge to escape to the country side. The only problem is there aren’t too many places in Jozi where you can go for a good old fashioned country experience. Until now that is! I’ve discovered the most charming little country restaurant in Kyalami – and it won’t take you an age to get there either. Gourmet Gurus is situated just off Main Road and is the place to go for wholesome, organic and free range goodies.
What I love most about Gourmet Gurus is that most of the ingredients used in the restaurant come straight from the on-site farm. That’s right; the food goes straight from the farm to your table – stick your head out the window and you can literally see the veggies growing in the fields. The restaurant is housed in an old farmhouse and is chockfull of rustic charm. This isn’t your typical gourmet eatery but you can bet that their food is right up there with some of the best Joburg has to offer. The food reminds me of the types of things my mother used to whip up in the kitchen - except with a little extra pizzazz. To put it simply; the eatery serves up wholesome comfort food that’s just too good to miss out on.
Gourmet Gurus offers delicious breakfasts, morning tea, high tea, sumptuous lunches and divine dinners that will have you rushing back for more. This isn’t the type of place you only go to once – trust me you’ll be craving their food for days afterwards. I also loved that here’s always something new and fresh on the menu (literally). The menu changes weekly – depending on what Chef Richard Rust can get hold of fresh from the onsite farm or through local suppliers.
My dining buddy and I popped through for a delicious lunch and munched on a yummy chicken salad, mushroom lasagne and an oh-so-decadent Chocolate Fondant with homemade ice cream (a definite must try!) They’ve also got some fantastically fresh drinks on offer – like homemade ginger beer and fruit smoothies.
All the tables at the restaurant look out on to the tranquil garden that wraps around the cobble stone building. The quaint eatery has a truly magical setting and it’s almost impossible to pull yourself away from the serenity of it all. There’s also plenty of room for the little ones to run around and play if you’re worried about keeping them still while you dig into your meal.
Before you go make sure you pop into the farm stall inside the restaurant building. Here you can stock up on freshly baked and picked goods. From freshly baked rusks and pies to exotic fruits and veggies grown on-site you’ll be hard pressed to walk away from this spot empty handed.
Gourmet Gurus is open from 12:00 – 16:00 on Tuesdays, from 12:00 till late Wednesday to Friday, from 09:00 till late on Saturdays and from 09:00 – 16:00 on Sundays.
