Visiting one of Joburg’s spectacular food markets is, in itself, a rather fabulous way to spend a Sunday. But combine that with a trip up to the 50th floor of the Carlton Centre to admire the views while you eat your recently purchases market goodies – well, it doesn’t get much better than that!
Picnics in the Sky has just launched – the newest edition to Mainstreetwalks, which aims to help people rediscover the inner City. Their various offerings include guided walks around the city (including a few trips on the new Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport System), an Art and Justice Tour, Maboneng Precint Tour, Corporate Tours and even an Amazing Race!
Picnics in the Sky takes place on the first Sunday of the month, so do book early to get a spot! We met at the Market on Main at 11am and were given a picnic basket with all our picnic utensils, bottled water and a few staple items such as fresh bread. We could then browse around the market and stock up on anything else we would like to eat at our own cost. (Steve and I chose some gourmet sandwiches and samoosas, while our friends opted for Dim Sum, cheeses, chocolate brownies and hotdogs for the kids. The market is quite an eye-opener with really amazing food – well worth a visit!)
We were then transported to the Carlton Centre and taken up to the 50th floor. It is phenomenal to walk around and view Joburg from this amazing vantage point – while Greg (our amazing tour guide and force behind Mainstreetwalks) chatted to us about the history of various areas.
Hunger called and we headed back for our food. Some tables and chairs were available, with picnic blankets for the kids or those wishing to spread out – and we ate and chatted and enjoyed the views while the kids played safely. There is also a bar with drinks, and they makes some very nice cappuccinos! We then headed back to the Market on Main at around 2pm.
This is such a different and fascinating way to spend a Sunday, and we all left saying that we would be back with friend or family visiting from overseas. The cost is R220 for two people (and R50 per child under 16). This includes your picnic basket with basic items, transport to and from the Carlton Centre and a talk by a resident Joburg expert. Worth every single cent, in my opinion – we loved it!
