There’s nothing like a fabulous weekend getaway to refresh the soul and forget all the stresses of big city life. But sometimes organising a break away from the city can be stressful in itself – you have to take leave, plan your travel time and make sure you get just enough activities in to make the whole thing worthwhile. Which is why I’ve recently become a fan of what I like to call ‘same city holidays’ – where I check into a stunning hotel, B&B or boutique hotel somewhere else in Joburg and pretend I’m miles away from home. I’ve realised it’s quite possibly the best plan ever because you get all the benefits of a holiday without all the stress of travelling. My most recent mini break was at Morrells Manor House and I loved it so much I didn’t want to leave!

The French-style manor house in Northcliff has got to be one of Joburg’s best hidden gems – the grounds of the manor house are simply divine and once you’re inside its massive white walls you’ll quite easily forget that you’re anywhere near Joburg. In fact you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve snuck away to the country for the weekend. The house itself, with its wooden floors, light-filled rooms, antique furniture, and cosy atmosphere is also ever-so-charming. As you all know I’m a sucker for all things vintage so I fell head over heels in love with its old world charm. What’s more, when you check into Morrells you also get access to an onsite butler who will take care of your every need. It’s just too fabulous for words.

Morrells Manor House has 7 rooms, all of which are named after a different botanical. Each of the rooms offers luxurious features such as extra length beds, under floor heating, separate work desks, flat screen TV with DSTV and heating blankets for winter. Each room also has a unique feature, like a Victorian slipper bath, a private courtyard, a double headed shower or a chaise longue in the bath room. We stayed in the Rosa room and I was blown away at just how stunning it was, and I immediately started day dreaming about what it would be like to stay there forever.

Dining is also quite a luxurious, yet intimate, affair at Morrells and we were lucky enough to enjoy dinner and breakfast at the hotel over the weekend. The food has a definite homemade, country feel and is the perfect combination of comfort food and fine dining. If you’re not staying over, don’t fret, the restaurant is also open to non-hotel guests seven days a week.

For dinner we enjoyed a sumptuous starter of Tomato Soup and homemade bread, a main of Oxtail stew and Rack of Lamb, and a decadent dessert of Amarula Crème Brûlée and Chocolate pudding with ice cream. The soup was quite possibly the best tomato soup I’ve ever had and I thoroughly enjoyed my Oxtail stew which was cooked to perfection. Breakfast the next morning was just as lovely and we tucked into a starter of mini chocolate croissants, and muesli and yoghurt, and finished it all off with Eggs Benedict (which was excellent!) and a Full English Breakfast.

If you’re looking for a special place to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or engagement Morrells is the perfect place to escape to with your special someone. The spot has the most amazing romantic atmosphere and definitely won’t fail to impress (hint, hint to all the husbands and boyfriends out there). Say hello to .
