Happy Monday, Darlings! If, like me, you love to start your week off with something interesting, then get ready to tempt your taste buds! Nicole, our Joburg.co.za guest blogger, has the lowdown on a range of bug-tastic dishes from the Pestaurant. This one is definitely for the brave of heart (and stomach)!
Confession time – I’m a little (ok, maybe more than a little) squeamish when it comes to creepy crawlies. So, you can imagine my surprise when a container of plain roasted crickets showed up on my desk the other day!
The Pestaurant by Rentokil is all about showcasing the health benefits of eating bugs, so, when I got the chance to try these dishes out for myself, I had two options – either conquer my fears, or do what any audacious young lady would do and rope someone else into trying it out for me. My brave colleague, Ryan reluctantly accepted the challenge (bugs, one. Nicole, zero).
We were given the chance to try out the plain roasted crickets, mealworms, buffalo worms and locusts, not forgetting the scorpion lollipop, which, needless to say, was incredibly daunting (I really didn’t envy Ryan here). The plain roasted crickets were salty and woody, with a slight aftertaste – he likened it to a pretzel, a very weird pretzel. The buffalo worms tasted similar to the crickets but were not as pungent (and definitely easier to down because of their size). The mealworms were crunchy, also with a slight aftertaste, and the locusts (by far the biggest of all the bugs) were more wafer-like – think crunchy at first and soft inside. Last, but certainly not least, was the scorpion lollipop – Ryan described it as sweet on the outside but definitely the kind of treat that you’d be scared to reach the centre of.
Ryan named the scorpion lollipop as his favourite (because of the sugary coating, of course) and the locusts as his least favourite. His verdict on the experience is that it’s either for the brave or the crazy, but it’s something you have to try at least once (bugs, one and a half. Nicole, still zero)!
If you’re keen to try out this experience (and to not follow in my fear-filled footsteps), then you’re in luck! The Pestaurant will be arranging a pop up stand at Cresta Shopping Centre on 3 June from 12:00 to 14:00. And … it’s completely free! So now you can try out everything from the plain roasted mealworms to cream cheese and cricket wraps, and sweet chilli locusts.
Say Hi to the Pestaurant on .
