I don’t know if you’ve noticed but it’s getting pretty toasty here in Jozi! I love warm weather … what I don’t love so much is having my makeup melt off my face as a result of the heat and humidity. I’m sure you feel the same way … right, Darlings? Not to worry, though – I’ve got some expert tips up my sleeve for looking pretty and fresh in the hot weather and I’m going to share them with you!
1. Prep Your Face With Primer
When the sun warms up, we want our complexion to look sun-kissed and flawless all day long, don’t we? In order to achieve this, applying your regular moisturiser as well as a good quality primer (preferably with an SPF) under your foundation is a must! A primer won’t only ensure that your foundation glides on seamlessly, it’ll also make sure it stays intact all day long! My go-to primer is MAC Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage … it’s an amazing lightweight lotion that calms and soothes the skin, blots away excess oil and evens out redness while improving the application of both liquid foundation and powder at the same time. A more budget-friendly option is Woolworths Face Smoothing Primer.
2. Opt For Waterproof Eye Makeup
Hot weather means sweating, swimming and happy tears (everyone gets married in spring or summer!), so using waterproof eye makeup is essential to avoid the racoon look. Whether you swim or just like to sunbathe, waterproof eye makeup is best. Even if you don’t plan on getting your face wet, lying down in the sun can make your eyes water … my go-to eye pencil in the summer is Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner. It’s a great crease-resistant gel liner that glides on easily. Plus, it comes in three fabulous shades (I love the Deep Bronze and Dark Brown). In terms of waterproof mascara, I’m totally obsessed with Maybelline Great Lash Waterproof Mascara.
3. Favour A Lighter Foundation
To avoid looking caked up, favour a lighter look instead of super-heavy makeup during the warmer months. Seriously, Darlings … the only thing you should lay on thick is the sun cream! A foundation that matches your skin tone well and is light to medium in coverage will look fresher for longer than a heavier product – it also won’t appear as patchy halfway through the day … I recommend going for a foundation that has an SPF and some oil control if you’re prone to oiliness. My top two light coverage foundation picks are MAC Studio Face and Body Foundation and Chanel Perfection Lumière Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Sunscreen Makeup. If you’re not suffering from a breakout, you can even pass up on the foundation and just use a tinted moisturiser like Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturizer instead.
4. Choose Cream Blush Over Powder
In terms of blush, a cream product will stay put much longer than a powder … it’ll also appear smoother and more even on your skin. Plus, it’s easy to reapply when your skin’s hot or damp. What I like doing on hot days is applying a cream blusher and then setting it with a translucent face powder. Also, a fabulous trick to go from poolside (because there’s no beach around here – sad face) to dinner is to get a cream product that works for both your cheeks and lips, like MAC Cremeblend Blush in Ladyblush – apply it with your fingertips for a quick yet gorgeous touch-up!
5. Look Sun-Kissed The Safe Way
It’s possible to look beautifully bronzed while protecting the delicate skin on your face with an SPF. I do, however, recommend avoiding traditional bronzer … powder bronzers tend to go patchy or come off in a humid climate. So, what I like doing is using a water-resistant foundation a few shades darker than my skin tone as a liquid bronzer – you’ve got to try it for yourself! Just make sure the product is very light in texture and coverage, like L’Oréal True Match Liquid Foundation. To apply it, simply use a fluffy foundation brush to blend the product to the high planes of your face – your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin – for a beautiful natural look.
With these melt-proof beauty tips, your makeup is sure to stay perfect even on the hottest of days!
