The market scene in Joburg has really caught on in the last few years with farmers markets and urban food markets opening all over the city and I really thought I’d seen it all until last Thursday when I was invited to the launch of The Sheds@1Fox which is set to be the big thing over the coming months. You’ve likely heard the buzz by now but I went along to get you an inside look and make sure you stay informed.
The idea is along the lines of Market on Main or Neighbourgoods Market in that it’s set in the trendy part of town and has a distinct ‘New Yorky’ urban feel but the one thing I couldn’t help noticing was that the crowd is far more mature than both of those other markets and by that I mean that it doesn’t turn into a drinking competition despite having a fantastic selection of craft beers, champagne and wine.
Set in a historic warehouse on 1 Fox Street, the market space is a lot bigger than the other urban markets which I think will help with the kind of tend to numbers they experience over weekends. I also noticed that a concerted effort was put into ensuring that there would be enough seating too. Seating is always a problem at these places and although I don’t doubt that they will run out, it’s still a step in the right direction.
Aesthetically you can expect a very similar vibe to Arts on Main but with literally thousands of pallets used to separate the stalls and different areas. Everything has that rustic look, even the pot plant holders are made from crates with some of the original graphics and signage from the warehouse left behind for effect. I noticed one sign saying “Danger! Dynamite Unloading Area” or something to that effect which I thought was quite amusing. These touches and the way the market is shaped and designed create an illusion that you could keep walking around all day.
Another really cool feature of The Sheds is their outdoor courtyard which can hold a couple of food trucks not to mention being a great spot as a gig venue which I’m sure we’ll see them taking advantage of over the coming months. We were there at night and the lighting just makes it even more romantic. Popular food truck, 5 Star Street Cuisine has currently set up out there but I’m guessing we’ll see a few more popping up in the near future.
Altogether I am more than just impressed. The Sheds@1Fox have stepped it up a notch and I encourage you to get a group of friends together and head down as soon as possible! They are open Thursdays to Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00 but word has it that they will be opening in the evenings soon too. This means that office employees nearby can enjoy lunches there on Thursdays and Fridays and if it opens at night will be the perfect place to meet up with friends for some gourmet food and drinks.
