Lately, our office has been buzzing with endless talk about healthy living, weight loss and cutting down on sugar, but for most of us, making that a reality has been just as difficult as keeping up with Bruce Jenner… I mean Caitlyn Kardashian … no wait … Caitlyn Jenner (see, I just can’t keep up)! Luckily, Brigette, our new blogger, has the scoop on how to make healthy living just a tad easier with Canderel.

Am I the only one who feels as though this year’s winter just crept up out of nowhere and hit us like a big yellow American school bus? (I was very much still in my sundress mode, thanks). As a result, I’ve had to endure a really bad and annoying cold but hey, there’s an upside to everything – thanks to Canderel, I’m back in my happy place!

I can safely say I’ve struck gold this winter. Apart from the sickening taste of medicine, I’ve had plenty of delicious hot drinks, chocolate and fruit salads… and some more chocolate to help me recover. I know, that sounds like a whole lot of sugar, right? Not at all! Yours truly embarked on a Canderel journey all week and like a thirteen-year-old narrating the decision to attend a One Direction concert, I must say, OMG … best decision ever!

Giving up sugar is by no means an easy task but as you may or may not know, Canderel sweetener has a similar taste to table sugar so essentially, you’re giving up nothing at all. Instead, there’s much to be gained. The sweetener contains less calories and carbohydrates, which is just perfect for people looking to reduce their daily calorie intake, without compromising on taste.

Their main sweetener range currently includes the original Canderel, Canderel Yellow with sucralose, and the new Canderel Green. My absolute favourite has to be the vanilla-flavoured Canderel Yellow sticks. No really, I’ve been living on these. They have added a subtle exotic, sweet flavour to all my hot beverages and fruit salads for a fraction of the kilojoules (Amen!). Not to mention the splendidly tantalising aroma! Canderel with sucralose is also perfect for cooking and baking those special meals and desserts without the kilojoules. Hop on over to the Canderel kitchen for a variety of delectable recipes.

Canderel has also introduced a new range of Green Sticks and Tablets, which are specially formulated with the sweetest extracts found in the stevia plant - steviol glycoside. It’s 100 times sweeter than sugar but a million times healthier as replacing one teaspoon of sugar with it will save you 84 kilojoules! So if you’re a vegetarian or diabetic, these are especially suitable, as part of a balanced diet. And the best part of it all, you ask? They are available in convenient sachets and tablets - ideal to pop into your bag when you’re on the go.

Now for the chocolate treats! The Canderel range allows you to indulge in man (or woman’s) favourite delicacy without the added sugar, or guilt for that matter. They come in eight delicious flavours to suit all tastes – Milk, Dark, Crispy, Milk & Nut, which includes the new Bubble and Almonds in Milk Chocolate that I had the pleasure of munching on all week. To tell you the truth, I was expecting it to taste like nothing. To my surprise it tasted just like chocolate without the bitter aftertaste. You’d even swear the Almonds in Milk Chocolate has a whole lot of added sugar (but no Ma’am).

Despite being someone who’s played the anti-hero in every tale of healthy living, I definitely plan on having a great year with this outstanding range from Canderel. Do join me.

Say Hi to Canderel on .

Joburg's Darling Hi Michelle We understand where you're coming from but Joburg’s Darling does not promote products for monetary gain, we simply review products that we find are worth talking about. It is also completely up to our readers to agree or disagree with our posts, and perhaps not try out the product. The reviews are also based on the reviewer’s individual experience and, therefore should not be reproved because it is their opinion.

Michelle I'm sad that Joburg's Darling has devolved into a daily advertisement... And promoting sweetener is problematic in any case; see this extract from the Harvard School of Public Health (http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-drinks/artificial-sweeteners/): "One study of 3,682 individuals examined the long-term relationship between consuming artificially sweetened drinks and weight. The participants were followed for 7-8 years and their weights were monitored. After adjusting for common factors that contribute to weight gain such as dieting, exercising change, or diabetes status, the study showed that those who drank artificially sweetened drinks had a 47% higher increase in BMI than those who did not. One concern about artificial sweeteners is that they affect the body’s ability to gauge how many calories are being consumed. Some studies show that sugar and artificial sweeteners affect the brain in different ways. The human brain responds to sweetness with signals to eat more. By providing a sweet taste without any calories, however, artificial sweeteners cause us to crave more sweet foods and drinks, which can add up to excess calories. At the University of California-San Diego, researchers performed functional MRI scans as volunteers took small sips of water sweetened with sugar or sucralose. Sugar activated regions of the brain involved in food reward, while sucralose didn’t. (56) It is possible, the authors say, that sucralose “may not fully satisfy a desire for natural caloric sweet ingestion.” So, while sugar signals a positive feeling of reward, artificial sweeteners may not be an effective way to manage a craving for sweets."
