I'm normally a woman who lunches in Parkhurst, Rosebank or Sandton (to name but a few). So when I heard about a stunning new restaurant – Ramen Asian Noodle Bar – in Braamfontein, I was rather intrigued. Braamfontein has developed an unfortunate reputation over the years, but there are many businesses and individuals that are investing their time, money and effort into reviving the area, offering an improved cultural urban feel.

Ramen Asian Noodle Bar is one of the fantastic contributors. The restaurant has a very earthy feel with simple but inviting decor. It’s the kind of trendy venue I’d love to hire out for a birthday party, as it has a sizeable interior with a unique table setting and wrought iron seating outside to relax in and soak up the sun. Their food matches the Japanese simplicity – Ramen is all about using the freshest possible ingredients prepared in the simplest way to get the maximum flavour. Everything is stir fried in a little sesame oil, and is done so quickly that the crispness of the vegetables is not compromised and leaves a fresh clean taste on our palate.

For lunch, I had the Noodle Stir Fry with Chicken and veggies so fresh they crunched with every bite – this is definitely an item I’d add to my “crave-must-go-out-and-buy-immediately” list. Their menu is Japanese inspired and impressive with Bunny Chow, Ramen (a soup with thick delicious udon noodles), Curry and Rice and scrumptious wraps. Prices are very reasonable and range from R35 to R40.

This is the ideal place to sit outside in the grove, an enclosed “arty” area directly opposite the Lamunu outside bar area, a square where there is often a live jazz band – and it’s just around the corner from The Neighbourhoods Market! If parking is your concern, there is a secure parkade across the road for a flat rate of just R10.

Ramen is a stunning Japanese style contemporary restaurant that is unlike any other restaurant in its category. I loved it!
