I believe there are two days that every woman looks forward to – the first is the day that scientists discover a formula for chocolate that has all of the sweetness and none of the fat (fingers crossed!), and the second is, of course, her wedding day! Well, Darlings, I recently tied the knot (cue the collective ‘awww’), and decided to enjoy a little quality time afterwards with my new hubby at the gorgeous African Pride Irene Country Lodge.

Now ladies, if you haven’t been to Irene yet … the obvious question is: ‘why not?!’ It’s right around the corner (basically between JHB and Pretoria), and the estate itself is incredibly beautiful and a dream to stay at! My husband Brenden (between us … I’m still getting used to saying that) and I opted to stay in a Superior King room, which had the sweetest view!

The thing that struck me about Irene is the truly romantic setting – think pretty, flowery grounds, tranquil surroundings and classic architecture with a touch of elegance. Needless to say, it is the perfect place to get away from the buzz of the busy city.

After getting settled in, we decided to check out Irene’s Camdeboo Day Spa (there’s nothing like a dip in the Jacuzzi after a long drive, am I right?). You may be happy to know the spa’s facilities are open to all staying guests … so the only thing you have to pay for is the individual treatments, should you choose to have them.

Anyways, all that relaxing worked up our appetites so we were super excited to try out some of the dishes from the Meadow Green restaurant. Not wanting to miss out on any of the flavours on offer, I started off with the Grilled Vegetable Tian (grilled aubergine, roast tomato, avo, cream cheese and melba toast) and Brenden went with the Game Carpaccio, which was slivers of smoked game, chunky tomato compote and toasted bruschetta. Both dishes were equally delightful and proved to be the perfect foundation for our mains!

I went with the Oven Baked Duck, with baby potatoes, veggies and toasted pine nuts, and Brenden opted for Irene’s Signature 450g Rib-Eye (which, by the way, is aged for 40 days!). To end off our scrumptious evening, we shared a sweet slice of cake … it was oh-so-good!

After a relaxing night and before our departure the next morning, we enjoyed Irene’s extensive Buffet Breakfast (personally, I had to give the waffles a try, and I’m so glad I did!). Add to that an aromatic cup of cappuccino, and you have yourself a truly tasty start to your day.

Darlings, if you’d like to get away for a night or two with that special someone (or even for a little ‘you-time’), I highly recommend Irene … my only regret is that I didn’t stay longer. Ciao!

Say Hi to African Pride Irene Country Lodge on .

zodwa makhubela Hi Nicole! Congratulations on your new marriage, I wish you and your new husband many happy years together. I've been to Irene Country resort twice with my family and we cant wait to go back. At fist we stayed in the rooms near the lake, and oh my God it was so nice waking up to the sound of the ducks & fresh breeze. On our second stay we booked in the forest superior king rooms. It was like we were in bush veld in Mpumalanga whilst we were just a throw away from JHB.
