I have a confession to make: a couple of weekends back I needed a break from the city. Joburg has my heart but sometimes a bit of time out in nature is exactly what I need to reboot before returning to the chaos that I thrive on … with that in mind, a trip to Bakubung turned out to be just the thing!
Located in the heart of one of the most scenic parts of the country, the beauty of the Pilanesberg and the richness of the landscape simply can’t be ignored. In fact, it’s enough to take your breath away!
The rooms are modern and have beautiful finishes … all our needs were catered to during our stay but the undisputed highlight of our trip had to be the safari walk. It’s definitely something that should be added to everybody's bucket list (I’m serious, write it down)!
There’s just something about being in nature that brings about the nostalgia of a true South African family experience … let’s face it, there’s nothing as exhilarating (and nerve-wracking!) as setting off into the bush on foot with an experienced guide. The true beauty of the South African bush can only truly be appreciated when explored on foot.
Our guide, Jarred, was knowledgeable and made our excursion that much more enjoyable by sharing his insight and thorough expertise of the region and its wildlife!
On our walk, we were lucky enough to stumble upon a herd of buffalo, which we followed for several hours as they moved across the terrain in sync. We were only several metres away but our guide remained completely calm and ensured our safety at all times (even though there were a few heart-pumping moments!). As if the buffalo didn’t make us feel lucky enough, later on we stumbled across a beautiful white rhino! We kept our distance from this guy, though.
If you find yourself in Bakubung, take note of the Wednesday and Saturday night game drives, which are followed by delicious boma braais – you don’t want to miss out on this (trust me!). Another beautiful element of the stay was the view from the restaurant … picture wildebeest coming straight up to the lodge – talk about breakfast with a view!
So the next time you feel like you need to get out of town for a bit, get out your bucket list and pay Bakubung a visit!
