Darlings, there are many reasons to visit 27 Boxes in Melville … however, the top one (in my book, at least) is because it’s home to a trendy steampunk-meets-American-smokehouse-style restaurant by the name of The Countess. I recently visited them for dinner and can’t wait to tell you about my time there.

I arrived in the early evening with a group of friends and was surprised to find the restaurant almost chock-a-block, despite the fact that the rest of 27 Boxes was relatively quiet. We were seated at a lovely table inside the restaurant and welcomed by our friendly waitress.

Now, it’s important to note that The Countess doesn’t have a liquor license so you need to take along your own bottle of vino or bubbles … not that that’s a problem, right? Our waitress promptly brought over an ice bucket for us to pop our bottle of wine in, which we then cracked open to get our night started.

After a glass or two of vino, we perused the tantalising menu and decided to order up four small plates to share – the beer and cheese brûlée, the baked brie and thyme, the beer battered fish and the chicken liver parfait. Our board of starters was stunningly presented and everything was so tasty.

To me, the beer and cheese brûlée especially stood out (I loved how it was served in the cutest mini pot) – it was deliciously creamy without being overly rich. It was something different, and truly enjoyable with the toasted ciabatta bread on the side … yum!

For mains, we opted for something different. I went for the chicken burger served with slaw, smoked cheddar and BBQ sauce, with a side of truffle mac & cheese. Yes, you can choose mac & cheese as a side … I mean, does it get much better than that?

My burger was pure quality and bursting with flavour, so you can bet that I scoffed down every last mouthful. I also had a little taste of what was on my dinner companions’ plates, and am glad to report that I enjoyed the Moroccan vegetable stack as well as the buttermilk-marinated southern fried chicken, just as much as my burger!

For dessert, we decided to order up both the pot de crème as well as the chocolate mousse to share. While both desserts were as decadent as can be, I must say that the pot de crème was the winner … by far! A lighter take on a standard crème brûlée, it was just perfection in my opinion … I’d return to The Countess just for another bowl of that sweet, creamy bowl of goodness!

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed dining at this eclectic little restaurant. I’d highly recommend it for both lunch and dinner … the service is quick, the food is top-notch and the space itself is quaint yet ever so charming. It’s sure to delight you as much as it did me!

Say Hi to The Countess on .
