You’re a smart, talented career-orientated woman – and you’re going places, fast! So don’t let overdone makeup distract your supervisors and colleagues from your professional awesomeness. Stick to these fuss-free makeup tips for instant workplace success!

1. DON’T Wear Fake Lashes

Now don’t get me wrong – I love all things lash-related – but save the falsies for Saturday night. Can you imagine if they started falling off mid-meeting? Or if you had a glue malfunction to manage during a conference call? Faux lashes and photocopies just don’t go well together!

2. DO Go Easy On The Mascara

You want your lashes to be noticeable, but not in your face. The idea is to darken and lengthen your lashes just a bit. To achieve subtle yet still luscious lashes, roll your mascara wand as you apply your mascara from the base to the tip of your lashes. This will help you separate your lashes while lengthening them. My favourite mascara to wear to work is Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara – just a touch of this product is enough to achieve natural-looking full lashes. Plus, the long-wearing formula doesn’t flake or smudge – it stays flawless all day long!

3. DON’T Test Any Complexion-Changing Products On Weekdays

There’s a fine line between bronzed and burnt orange – and it’s not one I recommend crossing at the office … unless you want to be known as that “self-tan girl”. Leave the experiments with self-tanners, bleaches and the like for the weekend, just in case something goes amiss. You never know!

4. DO Master The Flawless, Dewy Make-Up Look

There’s nothing more perfect than a pretty, glowing complexion. All you need to achieve it is a long-wearing foundation, and a quality bronzer and highlighter. I love MAC Pro Longwear SPF 20 Compact Foundation, Diorskin Nude Air Tan Powder and Stila Pink Glo Cheek Duo. The key here is to apply your foundation and bronzer with a light hand to make it look natural. Don’t forget to blend your foundation into your hairline and all the way down to your décolleté! Then, apply your highlighter to your temples, the centre of your chin, your Cupid’s bow and down the bridge of your nose for an office-appropriate finish.

5. DON’T Wear Anything Frosted Or (Gasp!) Glittery On Your Lips

Sure, there are lots of pretty pink and nude lipsticks and glosses out there. But save those frosty, chalky products for when you’re in a less professional setting. These pale colours won’t do anything but wash out your face. They can also be very distracting and make you look young (and not in a good way!).

6. DO Stash A Pretty Neutral Lip Colour In Your Desk Drawer

There are so many nudish-pink lip colours on the market right now that are just downright dreamy! They’re all a great option for the workday (even if yours starts in the wee hours of the morning) and will perk up your entire face without leaving yucky rims on your coffee cup. This type of colour won’t seem too loud for your 9AM meeting either. My go-to work lippie is MAC Angel Frost Lipstick – the perfect subtle baby pink! And for a super-affordable option that’ll nourish and hydrate your lips at the same time? Maybelline Baby Lips in Peach Kiss … you’re welcome!

7. DON’T Wear Too Much Eye Makeup

Seriously – the last place you want to get heavy-handed is the eyes! Especially from 9 to 5. Not only is the smokey “raccoon eye” look very unflattering, it might also leave your bosses wondering if it’s leftover from the evening before. So, by all means, never overdo it when it comes to doing up your eyes!

8. DO Add A Professional Touch With A Little (Faux!) Liner

Let me let you in on a little eyeliner secret: eyeliner itself isn’t always necessary! You can achieve a clean liner look just as easily by spraying an angled liner brush with a touch of water and dipping it into a matte black eye shadow. This way, you can get the control of a liner while keeping the flattering, natural subtle shade of your favourite eye shadow. My go-to eye shadow to use for this look is MAC Carbon Eye Shadow. But if you have light eyes, scratch the black and go for a dark brown colour shadow instead. I suggest MAC Mystery Eye Shadow

9. DON’T Embellish Up To Your Eyebrows

This is a tough beauty look to pull off on the red carpet, let alone an office with unflattering fluorescent lights. Going up to your brow bone with your eye makeup isn’t going to do you any favours – that I can promise you! Plus, it’ll seem way over-the-top to your superiors and clients.

10. DO Go For A Natural Eye Shadow Look

A sweeping of subtle eye shadow and an itsy-bitsy line of black liner are the ideal answer to office eye makeup. It’s not too flashy or glittery. Plus, a natural eye makeup look will make your eyes appear perky and awake – a handy trick to have on hand round come Thursday or Friday! To create this look, use a large blending brush to mix a champagne shade of eye shadow like Stila Eye Shadow Compact in Kitten or MAC All That Glitters Eye Shadow over your lid and up into your crease. Then, use the same brush to softly blend a light brown eye shadow like MAC Sketch Eye Shadow into the outer corners of your lid.

By following these expert tips of mine, you’re sure to look polished and professional for work!
