I have a secret love affair with craft beer – so when I heard about the Foundry Cafe and Craft Bar I just HAD to give it a try! I’d heard so many good things about the new eatery that I was a little worried it had been oversold by those who had already been but none-the-less, I set off to try it for myself.

The weather was divine when we arrived at Parktown Quarter in Parktown North, so I was relieved when we were led to a table on the terrace. We settled in to peruse the menu and I was instantly excited when our waitress handed us a full craft beer menu! From Jack Black Pale Ale and Mitchells Forester’s Larger on tap to Darling Slow Beer Larger and Brewers & Union Steph Weiss by the bottle they’ve got a selection to suit any beer palate. My two dining buddies and I all opted for Mitchells Milk and Honey Ale for our first round (a delicious ale touched with a buzz of pure honey) at R 30 for 500ml on tap and later I indulged in a Kopperberg Pear Cider at R28 for a 330ml bottle while my lunch buddies opted to try one of their classic cocktails – a Caipirinha at R38. I was relieved to see they make their Caipirinhas with real Cachaca and not just any old rum (bonus points!).

While we drank we ordered a cheese plate for 2 to share amongst the three of us at R90 – what arrived was a board piled high with a selection of delicious cheeses with marinated olives, chilli roasted almonds, preserves, and a sourdough pizza bread. They have three Charcuterie and cheese planks on the menu – perfect for drinks with friends or a light meal. If you’re a little more peckish try one of their small plates which range from Zucchini and Parmesan Soup (R49) to Tempura Fishcakes (R58). They also have some delicious salads on offer like the Sashimi Salmon (sashimi salmon marinated in vegetable oyster and soya dressing infused with ginger, watercress, pickled fennel, and cucumber) at R90 and the Chicken Sofrito (roasted red pepper and paprika marinated chicken thighs with seasonal leaves, tomato, cucumber and radish) at R75.

For mains we decided to dig into the Pulled Pork Royale (barbecued pork ribs pulled off the bone with apple, green pepper, and pear cider relish served on a ciabatta roll) at R75 – a must try when you visit! If burgers and sandwiches aren’t your thing try one of their large plates – like Linefish, Wood-fired Mac and Cheese, or Crab Linguini – or tuck into a sourdough pizza! Their desserts are just as delicious and you get a choice of Vanilla Brulee, White Chocolate Pudding, or various flavours of homemade ice cream (the Banana and Peanut Butter ice cream is to die for!).

Foundry Café and Craft Bar is the perfect spot for a long and lingering lunch with friends and family – we were there for over 3 hours stuffing our faces and drinking beer. Go on a sunny day and enjoy the chilled out Parktown vibes while you veg out on the open terrace.
