Let’s face it – once upon a time, Joburg was sorely lacking in quality Mexican cuisine. Luckily, that’s no longer the case. In actual fact, one of the city’s most well-known spots for super-stuffed tacos and spicy churros has just opened a second restaurant. Say hello to Perron Bryanston!
Bryanston is no stranger to the tequila game, but Perron is the neighbourhood’s new Mexican place that brings with it loads of new tequilas to try. And that isn’t all – on the menu, you can look forward to all your favourite South of the Border fare, from nachos and jalapeno poppers, to quesadillas and burritos. I recently popped in for myself to try it out, and I was seriously 'wowed'.
I’ve been a huge fan of the Illovo restaurant since my first visit, but I’ve got to say the new Perron seems to be both more hands-on and vibrant. It’s a real treat in every way! I visited on a Thursday evening with a girlfriend of mine and we were instantly made to feel at home by the welcoming staff. To start off, we ordered up a bottle of white wine.
As far as the wine list is concerned, I must admit that it could be more extensive. However, it does provide both pocket-friendly as well as more 'special occasion' options. While my friend and I sipped on our vino, we admired the enthralling interior – think wonderfully loud pink and turquoise walls, casual wooden furniture, modern light fixtures, and a super-trendy bar.
To start, we then ordered up a number of 'nibbles' to share, including the Killer Guac, Jalapeno Poppers and Jerry Lee Lewis. In terms of taste, everything was spot on! I must say that the jalapeno poppers in specific were fantastic – the batter was perfect and they were oozing with cheese. The Jerry Lee Lewis – pork and beef meatballs in a chipotle chilli sauce – were something completely different that I really enjoyed trying.
For mains, we ordered the Black Bean Tostadas, Prawns in Adobe, Popeye Empanadas, Popcorn Pollo Taco and Fish Taco to share between the two of us. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that this was the best food I’ve ever received at Perron! I especially enjoyed the tostadas, the prawns and the tacos. No one makes crispy chicken or battered fish tacos quite like Perron!
Despite feeling rather stuffed after all that food, my friend and I decided that our visit wouldn’t be complete without trying their traditional Mexican churros, served with a chocolate dipping sauce – and I’ve got to say, I’m glad we made that decision. The churros were hot, fresh and just divine. We managed to scoff down the entire portion.
All in all, every plate of food we indulged in was top-notch. To add, the service was quick, knowledgeable and attentive, and I also admired how the lovely manager, Christa, was on the floor at all times checking up on all the tables.
If you’re looking for a fabulous spot to enjoy a festive night out filled with delicious eats and drinks, great service and a vibrant atmosphere, look no further than Perron. You’ll be glad to know that parking is free and fuss-free, too!
Say Hi to Perron on .
