If you’re looking for somewhere fancy pants to celebrate your birthday, anniversary or any other special occasion soon then boy have I got a great find for you today! The newly refurbished Central One restaurant at Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel in Sandton is a must-try for foodies and those looking for a restaurant with a difference! Here’s why I fell completely in love with this spot!

As far as fancy pants restaurants go Central One is definitely one of my favourites. With striking decor accents (like oversized lampshades, generous splashes of turquoise and supremely comfortable high-backed bucket chairs) juxtaposed with the simplicity of minimalist-style tables and wall-to-ceiling glass windows all along the one side of the restaurant, Central One is undoubtedly amongst the most elegant restaurants in Sandton. The view of Sandton from this spot will definitely delight you and your dinner guests, and dishes prepared by the award-winning chefs will go a long way to wowing your taste buds.

I got to try a six-course tasting menu at the restaurant and left wanting more! The fine dining menu is updated quarterly as the seasons change and I was delighted to hear that chefs rely on the freshest ingredients to create what they call “delicious modern comfort food.” Some of my favourite things on the menu the night I visited included the Seared Tuna (yellow fin Tuna pan-seared and served alongside hummus, olive tapenade, pickled Quail eggs, slow roasted cherry tomatoes and mixed Asian greens), Beef Carpaccio (prime Karan fillet rolled in course pepper salt, then shaved fine and sprinkled with toasted and crushed hazelnuts and served with warm parmesan croquettes and a truffle aioli), Pork Belly (braised pork belly with sautéed teriyaki mushrooms, golden arancini stuffed with bacon, barley braise and a carrot and orange puree) and the White Chocolate Frozen Parfait dessert (Gooseberry puree, lemon sorbet, lemon scented meringue, sesame poppy crunch and poached gooseberries).

The Seared Tuna was absolutely delicious and the Quail eggs with the homemade hummus and olive tapenade really made the dish for me. I also loved the Beef Carpaccio (one of my most favourite things to order ever) served with the truffle aioli as it was a bit of a different take on the old-favourite. Before the pork belly came out we were informed that it was an award-winning dish and I was excited to find that it definitely lived up to its accolades. And, of course the dessert was a taste sensation of note! I have never had poached gooseberries before and I must say that after this experience I am a fan. We also paired each of our dishes with a fabulous wine from their extensive wine menu and I found each wine to be a perfect accompaniment to the flavours on my plate.

Central One offers diners the opportunity to try their five-course tasting menu (with or without wine pairing) five days a week from Tuesday to Saturday. The menu changes every week and guests can expect to pay R350 per person excluding the wine pairing or R495 per person including the wine pairing. They also offer a delicious a la carte menu featuring everything from soups, salads and fish to pasta, grills and poultry. The average price of a starter is R65, a main R150 and dessert R65.
